• Chapter 3

Life had been horrible since that traumatizing scene of my mother, dead, and seeing my little brother crying for help. Her body had been cremated two days after, and the funeral was very miserable. We prayed for her, thinking that she would come back to life, but saving her is no use. Our caring and lovable mom, is already dead. Right in front of our eyes on that horrifying day.

After about a month, Ren and I were sent to live with out aunt, Sophia, which who had been probably Mom's sister. When we arrived at her pink house by taxi, we were shocked by how the house is shaped. Usually, every home is rectangular, or cubed-shaped. Instead, her house looks like a red stop sign, you know, the ones you see in roads all the time.

The grass is very pointy and green, and I bet that if you step on them, they would go straight through your skin, literally. There were trees and all kinds of greens located at her front yard, and in front of us, there was a bright blue car. Not scratched, yet. The roof is, of course, a pyramid, and the shiny windows were shaped like rectangles. There was a doormat, but somehow, it looks sort of out of place. Like being here, alone, with no parents to care for me or Ren.

And finally, I rang the doorbell. There was a loud noise after that, and the door opened. A pale lady with brown hair with no wrinkles opened the door and peered outside at us. She was wearing a flowery shirt with khaki shorts, with sandals and bed hair. Is she that lazy? Well, from what I can tell, according to her outfit, she definitely likes flowers as more as Mom.

"Hello children!" she exclaimed as she surveyed us one at a time. "Welcome to my house! My name is Sophia Zoe, but you can call me Sophie. Just so you know, I am very allergic to flowers. So no flower scents in my house, okay kiddos?"

Oh, so I was incorrect about my prediction. But I am still very confused on why she wore that shirt covered in flowers.

"Hey," Ren spoke without any interest. After that day, he had changed a lot. He was no longer a yelling and screaming kind of person.

"Hi," I answered after him. I always come up to a new person I do not know with nothing to say. There's just, a suspicious and reappearing deleting-thinking thing in my mind. I have no idea what that is.

After our greetings, we went to put our personal belongings in our own new rooms and went to the kitchen. The whole house seems more lively than ours, with a familiar scent similar to Jennifer's living room. At the kitchen, Ren plopped down at a nearby chair next to a brown wooden table, and I sat right next to him. Sophie was on the other side of the rectangular table. To me, everything in this house is probably all shaped like rectangles. Thinking to myself, I hope that the toilet seat is also not shaped that way. If it is, then I would just move out and go live at Jennifer's house.

"So how's your day?" she asked me and Ren. I am sure that my little brother would not answer, so I answered instead.

"Fine." I mumbled. Shoot, that was big a mistake. But the woman was still smiling at both of us. She probably did not even hear me. I hope she didn't, actually.

Suddenly, a little kid, who looked liked a three-year-old, came towards Sophie and hugged her. I thought she had lived alone all by herself.

"Good morning," he uttered to her. Sophie must be this little kid's mom. "Who are they?"

"Morning, Hex!" she exclaimed as she rubbed his hair with her hand. He had red hair and little freckles. "These kids are Ren and Lily Zoe Slater. Their mom had perished, so I have to take care of them."

He looked confused. "Mommy, what does the word 'perished' mean?"

Sophie became pale, and looked away. "I will tell you when you are older," she muttered.
