• Chapter 1

    “LYDIA? LYDIA!”
“Huh? What?” I looked up from my drawings to Mrs. Crowley.
“Lydia, what’s the answer?” she asked, glaring.
I looked down at my geometry book. “Uhh…” I read the question and did the math in my head. “Five x squared plus two x plus seven equals two hundred thirty-eight? X equals three.”
She nodded. “Good. Next time, pay attention please.”
My face turned beet red. “Sorry,” I mumbled, looking down at the picture I’d completed. Another strange marking, this time circular. What were with the symbols I had been making lately.
Ikaika turned in his seat and looked at me. “Wow. And I thought I was the only one that didn’t pay attention.”
I glared, adjusting my glasses. “Shut up.” I looked back down at the notebook, returning to my thoughts.
“Whatcha drawing?” he asked, trying to grab my notebook.
I stabbed my pencil into his arm. “Don’t touch.” I pulled my pencil away and shook my head. “I have no idea. I just randomly started drawing it…”
    Ikaika rubbed his arm. “Weird.”
Mrs. Crowley looked up from the overhead. “Ikaika! Do you need to sit outside again?”
    “No thanks,” he replied.
    “Then pay attention.”
I smiled slightly and decided to start writing the notes on the overhead. I wanted to keep my 4.0 grade point average. I scribbled quickly to catch up. Right as I finished, the bell rang. “Ooh! Science!” I hurriedly put my books in my bag and walked out the door. Mr. O’Brien was an awesome teacher. It was also one of the only three classes I had with my best friend, Ashlynn.
Who am I? Sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Lydia Calais. I’m a freshman at Lahainaluna High School. I’m a clarinet player in the marching band and an honors student. My best friend’s name is Ashlynn Davidson, another freshman and color guard in the marching band. Our best friends are all guys and two years older than us. We hate most freshman in our school. They think we’re weird. No idea why. It might be because we listen to scary bands, wear black, and paint our nails black. Plus, I wear heavy eyeliner and mascara. But I’m not completely sure if that‘s why…
