Chapter 1: The Killing of Fire

    1828

“Mama!” A small voice yelled at the, was once white, burning house. A little fiery haired girl was held back as she watched it go down in flames. Her mother had just been killed before her very aqua-green eyes. How cruel the world had turned was unbelievable…

“Come now child; we must get you to the ship!” Ms. Francis de’ Helton pulled along the small seven year-old behind her. The loud horn blew at London, England’s harbor. Smoke filled the air as many cheered and waved friends and family off into the large unknown before them. But the little girl would do anything to get out of this woman’s hand at any moment now. She truly wanted to be away from this land that held so many memories of her horrible past.

“Go on, Tiara Lee!” The old woman bellowed and pushes the young girl forward toward the large ship with her suitcase at hand. Ms. De’ Helton wanted to get Tiara Lee out of her hair for once and for all. The little redhead was being sent to her aunt’s, who lived over in America as a country woman.

Tiara Lee’s aunt and uncle, Sarah-Ann and Oliver Jenkins, lived on a farm in the southern of the almost-half century old Georgia. The small piece of land consisted of two-hundred and fifty acres of nothing but crops. And then another five acres was just for the house and small barn that they kept the cows, horses, and pigs in. It was almost fifty miles away from any city, town, and market place. It took almost a whole day to get to the market just to sell the food that they made!

But getting back to Tiara Lee (many call her TL), she stood by the railing of the S.S. Atlantic, and stared blanking at the waving woman who had kept her for only a few months, and had hated every second of it. Once the people looked like ants, because they were all so far away, the redhead turned and began walking toward the room she would be sleeping in for the next couple months.

Once arriving, the seven years old noticed that her roommate had already unpacked and was nowhere to be seen… That is, until the door opened behind her. When Tiara Lee turned to face her roommate she was surprised at who she saw.

“Oh, hello there, you must be Tiara Lee Stanley. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” There, standing in the doorway, was a midnight black haired boy with stunning blue eyes. He bowed politely to her, and kissed her hand gently. TL, who had never had something like this happen to her, blushed instantly at the fact that he was cute, sweet, and… kissing her hand. “I am Bradford McLoggins, but you may call me Brad.”

The redhead did nothing but nodded at him with wide eyes. To her surprise, even more, he took the bag from her hands and set it down on the bed. Wow… who knew there were real gentlemen out there these days? Tiara Lee only watched as he moved swiftly across the room finishing up his unpacking, and starting with hers…

“Oh no!” Tiara Lee exclaimed once she came back from her little dreamland. Quickly, she took the clothes from his hands and pushed them back into the bag with a blush. This was the first boy that had ever seen her little frilly undergarments. “You don’t have to. I’ll do them later. How about we go for a walk?”

The boy thought for only a moment, before pulling her from the room and out to the deck. While she mentally sighed in relief, TL took in the scenes before her. Nothing but bright blue water surrounded them. White seagulls flipped their wings rapidly, to only dunk head-first into the water and get their lunch. This was a paradise that the little redhead would love to live in forever.

“Would you like to meet my parents?” When she was taken from her thoughts, Tiara Lee nodded at his question, and they were off again. Up stairs and around corners was all she could remember as they made their way higher and higher to near the control room. And that is just where they went. “Mama! Papa! I brought a friend I wanted you to meet!” Who would have thought that this little boy’s father… was the captain of the ship that was taking her to a place that she knew little about? No one, most likely…

His father, the captain, wore a navy blue suit and the same color of hat atop his short black head. A small beard adored his face along with deep blue eyes. A high cheek bone and he was appealing with that nice tan, too. When the captain turned to look, a small was placed on his stern face, and he gave the wheel over to one of his subordinates.

“Well hello there, I’m Allen McLoggins. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Allen had crouched down to get eye level with the young girl. Tiara Lee nodded at him, and did a low curtsy as a small thank you. The woman that had stood next to him was smiling broadly, showing off her bright white teeth. She had dark brown hair with chocolaty brown eyes to go with it. TL could see that Brad had gotten all his looks from his father. “And this is my wife, Clare.” His hand motioned to the woman, and she bent down just as far.

“It’s a pleasure to meet bother of you.” She did a small bow this time, and grinned at them. “My name’s Tiara Lee Stanley. But you can just call me Tiara Lee, or like everyone else, TL.” From the looks in all their eyes… everyone could tell this was the beginning of a brand-new friendship. Even though only one knew it had ended before it even began…
