Chapter Six: It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's.......Hachi?!
"Jakotsu, how long are we going to be walking?" I asked him as the sun started setting in the distance.
"I thought Mukotsu was leading!" Jakotsu said with a surprised look on his face.
"Jakotsu, I thought you said you were going to lead, because Bankotsu would find you quicker!" Mukotsu defended.
"Okay, I'm leading, and I say we stop by the stream over there!" I said quickly before they could start arguing.
"Fine, but you don't know what Bankotsu looks like!" Jakotsu complained.
"Okay. Jakotsu you are in charge of finding this Bankotsu." I said pointing to him.
"I'll be in charge of leading and finding resting spots, and Mukotsu, you'll be in charge of finding food." I said looking down on the midget.
As he followed my gaze he said."You're thinking I'm a midget aren't you?"
"You're not?!" Jakotsu and I asked at the same time.
"ugh...NO I AM NOT A MIDGET!"
"Could have fooled me." Jakotsu replied.
"Okay, you guys can argue all you want, but I'm going to go look around." I said, walking off into the underbrush.
As soon as I was far enough away to barely hear the two, I sat down on a rock. then immediately jumped up again to find that the 'rock' wasn't actually a rock.
"AAHH" yelled the raccoon demon that I apparently sat on. He than transformed into a yellowish lump with a mouth and tail, and tried to fly away. Unfortunately as he tried to fly, he got his tail stuck in a tree. "Ow" he said after changing back to a raccoon.
"Well ya it's going to hurt."I said as I bent down to look at his tail. "You flew straight into a tree!"
"You're going to eat me aren't you!" He yelled as he tried to scramble away.
"NO! I'm just trying to make sure you're okay!" I called to him, as he slowly crept back towards me.
"Um, thanks I quess." He muttered. Then more clearly he said " I'm the raccoon dog Hachi!"
"I'm Kiri."
"Why are you out here on your own?" Hachi asked obviously more comfortable with me now.
"I'm not on my own." I answered back. "I'm traveling with two others, but they're back at camp." Looking at the almost completely dark sky, I said "I guess I should be too"
I then got up and started to walk away from the raccoon dog siting on the ground.
Suddenly in the distance a wolf howled.
"Wait!" Hachi said quickly as he jumped up and ran towards me. "You should probably have some more protection in the night."
"You're scared of wolves, aren't you Hachi?" I asked him, as I lead the way to the stream.
"No!" Hachi answered quickly.
Then something moved in the bush next to me. I second later Hachi was completely pressed against me shouting "AAAAAAHHHHHHH!"
"Hachi calm down! It's just hedgehog!"
"Oh, ya." He said quickly regaining his composure and acting like nothing in the world could scare him.
"Something tells me it's going to be a long night." I thought to myself as Hachi and I came across A sleeping Mukotsu, while Jakotsu was building a fire up.
"He falls asleep easily doesn't he." I asked Jakotsu as I sat down.
"Ya...... Who's your friend?" Jakotsu asked looking behind me to stare at the still standing form of Hachi.
"Oh!" I said jumping up. "Jakotsu this is Hachi, he's a raccoon dog. Hachi this is Jakotsu and the sleeping one is Mukotsu."
"hi" Hachi muttered as he sat down facing Jakotsu, who just nodded and laid down on his side.
"Night" Jakotsu said as he fell asleep.
"Night" I answered and turned around to look at the already sleeping form of Hachi.
"I thought raccoon dogs were nocturnal!"
