• Heart of a Wolf

Snowflakes fell gently to the earth, and a fog bank covered the forest. The sounds of gun shots were heard in the distance, and every time one went off, I knew one of my kind's life was taken and given to the Gods above... I could hear their feet, stomping into the soft earth, taking up some moss from the ground after every step.
"This way! The footsteps lead east! After the experiment!" shouted a voice. I knew they were on my tail, and I had to gain speed. I breathed deeply, and then allowed my muscles to relax, then charged off at full speed.
Their dogs, they were just behind me. I took once glance behind me, they were snapping their jaws shut, and their bright yellow eyes were gleaming by the moon's rays of soft light. One nearly caught up with me, and almost snapped his mouth on my tail.
I made a sharp left turn, and found myself cornered in the trees. I heard the dog's howls, and the people reloading. I was not going back to that lab though, not on my watch at least. I hid behind a tree, my nose pressed against a rock, my tail rubbing against its rough wrinkled bark. I felt my nails digging into the tree, making my stress the tree's stress as well.
They were closer, I had to think fast. As the only idea, I climbed as fast as I could into that tree. I hid myself in the leaves, my face only slightly visible. I looked down at my trackers. The dogs circled the tree, sniffing. I thought I had fooled them, but I was wrong. One dog looked up, and stared into my eyes. I gave him a pitiful look, but he growled.
One of my own kind gave me away, or at last, my wolf/dog half. The hunters looked up, and saw my bright red eyes. One aimed, and fired. I howled in pain as I covered my left eye. I had been shot, and they were smiling. Before they had another chance, I jumped on their dogs and sprinted off. Their hounds reared back in fight and even one ran off, but they got their act together quickly, and ran after me once again.
The cold air hit my face, and the fog hid me. I knew they wanted me dead or alive now. I wouldn't allow it though. the chase was now on once more, for either life... Or a slow, painful death.
