    Prologue;
    Chains and Shackles

The lights flashed on and off as I walked into the crowded popular club.
My eyes quickly scanned over the dance floor as I made my way through, looking for some one that I had come here to meet. My eyes laid on him instantly, almost scarily. But, when I looked at his face I had also noticed that he had found me.
“Hello, what can I get you tonight?” One of the multiple bartenders asked as I walked past.
I looked up at the strange looking man and then looked back at the bar. “Water please.” I answered loud enough for him to hear.
He looked me over quickly and flashed me a half grin. “Right away,”
I made my way to one of the many stools that outlined the bar. I sat down and looked up at the bartender as he grabbed a glass.
His skin was so pale that it looked like glass, but of coarse I was to have no surprised feeling since it had been a good four years that vampires had come out and were welcomed. Then again there was the small group of people like myself who didn’t believe that they should get the same laws as humans.
He turned back to me and placed the glass on the table. He stared at me for a moment as I quickly studied him from the front. He looked about 6’1, 6’2. His lime green hair graced his shoulders and stuck out all over the place but looked more like a style then messy bed head. His face was beautiful but was covered in metallic jewelry. Three rings sat on his bottom lip the one to the right had a chain connected to his ear, the one the far left was connected to his choker. Two silver bars went up in a latter style on his nose, and he had one in his left eyebrow. He wore an out fit that consisted of a fishnet shirt that showed his pale skin through. I couldn’t exactly catch what he was wearing for pants.
I felt that I had stared at him enough when I looked down at my water. “I feel that I have met you before, may I ask your name.” I whispered trying to be friendly; I mean who knew how old he was.
    “It doesn’t matter.” He whispered.
I looked up at him once more then looked away a chill of anger flew up my arms. “Your right, I shouldn’t have asked.” I hissed.
I could hear a soft chuckle. “It was nice seeing you again Miss. Rayne.”
It took a couple of seconds before I had realized what he had said, when I looked up to find a normal looking human wiping the table. “Wha-,” I hissed as I looked around the bar to find the guy. But, as you would have guessed it, I couldn’t even see a glimpse of his green hair. “So the Vampiric speed was a truthful thing after all?” I whispered to myself.
I stood up and took one last swig of my water and nodded to the new bartender.
He waved and took the glass away.
I shook my head; I couldn’t believe that I was in a bar to begin with. Now I was going to bee line it to the door and get out of the buffet as fast as I possibly could without having to look suspicious.
I didn’t get two feet before I heard a smooth voice behind me. “What is my lady drinking tonight?” He whispered.
I took a deep breath and stopped. “Water,”
He chuckled. “I thought you would be drinking something a bit more sophisticated.”
I finally turned around and looked at the light haired vampire. “Nathaniel,” I stated.
He grinned and bowed his head slightly. “Detective Rayne,”
I stared at him for a moment more then cleared my throat.
“Here on business I presume.” He asked.
I nodded. “Your right, do you think that we can go some where a little less loud and crowded.”
Nathaniel nodded. “Right this way,” He held up his hand offering me to grab it without saying anything.
I took it and followed him through the crowd of dancers. It was blur of speed until I realized we had stopped.
“Sorry about that.” He whispered. “In there.”
I looked up at the castle like door. “Office,”
He smiled. “Have to have one where ever I do my work.” He answered.
I nodded, made a lot of sense even if he was one of the undead.
He opened the door with ease, though it looked as if the door weighed a ton.
Nathaniel stood at the open door way and motioned me to go first.
I took the chance and walked into the vast room. I looked around at the books that lined the walls, and ended at the huge castle like fire place. To tell the truth you wouldn’t really expect a room like this to be in a club.
“Don’t be afraid to sit.” He purred.
I sat in one of the over stuffed leather chairs and looked up as Nathaniel made his way into the room.
“Did you happen to know that I was going to be here?” I asked watching as he mixed himself a drink.
    “Oui,” He answered.
“Did anybody else?” I asked once again.
Nathaniel looked back at me with his sea green eyes and gave me a half smile. “Non, not that I know of.” He chuckled.
    “What’s the chuckle for?”
Nathaniel didn’t answer as he walked towards his desk and sat down. “Didn’t you have business?”
I looked away as anger flitted over my face. “That’s right.” I took a deep breath and composed myself. Once I was sure that I was no longer angry over the chuckle I stood up. “I am here on behalf of the two murders that we have accounted with.”
Nathaniel looked up at me. “And you believe that I have information about them?”
I nodded. “You are the master Vampire.”
    “That’s right,”
“You know all of the Vampires in Damious, so you should know who is at fault since they are no longer in your court.” I inhaled sharply. “I know that once a vampire betrays their alliance they are placed under exile.”
Nathaniel stared at me then broke out into a grin. “For some one who loathes vampires as much as you do, you sure know a lot.”
I crossed my arms across my chest and stared at him. “That’s my job.”
He nodded and looked down at his papers. “Damion Lucifer,”
    “That’s a demonic name.” I whispered.
“Fits him perfectly if you ask me,” He stated as he pushed a horrible head shot of the man towards me.
I picked up the glossy and stared into a man that didn’t really look human at all, he was the kind of character who gave Vamps a bad name.
“Damion was one of the highest respected men in our court, which is why it was such a surprise that he betrayed us.” He pulled out a manila file and handed it to me. “We keep a close eye on the vampires that we feel are going to let us down.”
I opened the file and looked at all the photos. “Who’s this girl?” I asked studying the picture closely.
“We haven’t been able to figure it our yet. Though we suspect that she is one of the multiple humans working with them.” He whispered.
I nodded and closed the file. “Can I take this?” I asked looking up at the vampire.
“You may, that is why we made it.” He opened a drawer and pulled out another picture.
“Who’s this?” I asked looking that the old photo.
“Rose Marr.” He whispered. “The woman that we suspect is behind the whole up rising.”
“So you do know a lot about the cases that I am working on.” I whispered as I stared at the picture,
“Only what I am telling you right now.” He answered. “And I am about finished.”
I looked back and nodded. “Are your people working on the cases also?”
Nathaniel nodded. “We actually caught Damion and put him up in one of our high security holding facilities.”
“I feel a but coming along,” I whispered.
He cleared his throat as if he was ashamed. “He was helped to escape by some one on the inside.” He looked at the glass that he had poured earlier and lifted it up swirling the bronze drink inside. “That was about a week and a half ago.”
“Right before the last murder happened.” I answered.
“That’s why we believe that he was involved.” He inhaled. “He has a trade mark that kind of looks like a spade, the last body had one between the eyes, if I am not wrong.”
“How did you know that?” I hissed.
“My people had a look at the body.” He answered calmly.
“Who authorized that?” I hissed once again.
    “The Commander,”
“Strieber would never authorize that.” I stated.
    “Yes I know,” He whispered.
“Then how did you get the permission.” I asked.
“I know how to compromise.” He said with a wry smile.
I looked at him and shook my head, a flit of anger sweeping across my face. “I think I have all the information that I need.” I stood up strait and looked at the time. “I’d better get going.” I whispered so I wouldn’t yell. “Thank you for your time.” I hissed as I placed my shields up once more.
Nathaniel stood up. “Should I walk you out?”
I shook my head. “I think I can find my way out.”
He nodded and bowed his head slowly.
I started to walk towards the door then stopped. “Don’t have your people follow me alright, I have a sense to know when I am being followed.”
“I would never think of it.” He answered as he sat back in his chair. “Have a nice night Detective Rayne.” He wished in a business type way.

A tall man walked slowly into the large room that Nathaniel sat quietly at his desk in.
“Nice to see that you haven’t lost your touch on her,” He whispered as he looked up at the green haired stranger. “What did you say to her to get her all worked up like that?”
The man looked at Nathaniel and grinned.
    “Pierce,” Nathaniel warned.
