See You on the Other Side
See You on the Other Side

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know why it always seemed that I came here, at this time of year. The ground is freezing, the grass is dead and brown and the wind that blows is always kind of cold. The leaves on the trees are all dead and gone, and they dance with the sky, those that cant just tumble on the ground around me, pelted with those little stabbings of ice that called November rain, and yet...

Here I am again. I kneel before you once more, looking you over in awe, hardly believing still, that you loom above me. Stone grey and chilsed marble, cracked with age and time. The flowers placed here are long dead and withered, and i can not for the life of me understand why you would want to be buried here, in the middle of nowhere.

Was it so bad that people wanted to like you, to be with you, that you would shun them away? Turn your back on friends who were there to aid you when you needed it most? Not to take the hand of one outstretched, to stop you from falling into that pit you so often did? You didn't have to suffer, but you did it anyways, thinking it more noble in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune...

You dissapointed me. I thought you much stronger than that, but, when push comes to shove, my island friend, the waters that pelted you , that brushed against you, the storms you weathered, were too much, and the rock had to fall. You said, "it is the way of things.. our destinies do not ever meet, for each one of us is far too different to see the ends."

Now you rest in an empty grave, marked only by a single piece of stone, where no one will ever find you. your trees are your guardians now, and all you can see is the sky above you, grey now, though it seems. Soon, as with all things, the snows will come and hide you away again, freezing everything and turning your coffin to ice.

You will be remembered somehow, I'm sure. A part of you still lives on in me, as it always will. We were never easily seperated then, nor will we be now. Rest in peace.

"Its never that easy, is it?' her voice whispered from behind me.

I shrugged and let my shoulders fall. "It never is easy, to let go that which you have known most of your life...but, thngs change over time, and so do we."

She nodded her raven haired head and pulled her coat around her tightly. Her footfalls on the damp and chilled ground made no noise, and for an instant, I thouht it strange that, even though there was all this nature around us, that it seemed silent, save for the words that passed between us.

But, this was death, after all. Sooner or later, we all need to shuffle off our mortal coil. the sooner we do, the sooner we can get on with what follows yet.

I followed her to the car, and took a last look at this place. i knew I would not see it again anytime soon. She smiled at me from underneath her shroud.

"Com'on...the Longhouse awaits you, and I will not encur the wrath of the Allfather again. You're late enough as it is..."

We climbed nto the waiting vehicle and as the motor came to life, I closed my eyes and let my mind drift. As with all new beginnings, one had much to learn.

This, was but one of them.
