The blinds swayed slightly as I pulled back the Thomas the Train sheet separating the kitchen from the living room. The T.V. showed a small blue creature running around collecting rings while an orange and white flying squirrel like thing followed. Holding the small black controller, with a cord that led to a small black box that was a Sega genesis game system, was Matthew, sitting on the blue carpet attentively playing his game. He’d greet me saying, “Hey Katie, wanna play?” His face lighting up a bit, his blue eyes sparkling as they looked into my own as he offers the controller. I say, “No thanks” and he just shrugs and starts to play again. I start off just watching the screen then my focus goes to how into the game he is. Then, almost as if he could feel my stare, he turns and looks at me smiling that bright smile of his that warms my heart and I feel a smile spread across my own face. He finishes playing Sonic and we go outside to have another one of our numerous childhood adventures.
Matthew is the best friend I have ever had, and even though he isn’t that same boy who played those videogames so well that it astounded me, that is always how I will remember him. Now a days when I think of Matthew, which is most of the time, I envision him sitting at his piano, blue eyes still sparkling, and I still somehow see that boy. He has that same attentive focus, it’s just not on a T.V. screen anymore.
