The Doll Maker’s Daughter
I drew my knife along the wood
Shaping her face
I took her from that womb
Bringing her into this world
The walls are covered
With her brothers and sisters
Defective
Rejected
Their faces are marred
Their limbs are twisted
She was the one I had been looking for
I’ve always wanted a daughter
They were imperfect
She was pure
She was all that I need
Shaving away, layer after layer
Her hands began to take shape
Hands to hold
A face to smile
A little girl to love
At last I had finished.
Taking her from the table, I cradled her in my arms
I dressed her in the finest clothes
Dresses of silk and lace
My little girl, of wood and cloth
I took her to the market
I sent her off to school
And every day, when I picked her up
She smiled at me
That same loving smile
The smile I had given her
Years passed and I came to understand
Something made by mans own hand
Could never live
Could never love
This wooden creature was spun from my own heart
But had no heart of its own
I loved her dearly
But she could never love me back
So one day
I hung her up
Upon the wall
Beside her brothers and sisters
Defective
Rejected
No mark marred her perfect face
No limbs were twisted or deformed
But wood held no place in the hearts of men
No figure of mans creation
Can match that of God’s
How can I, a lowly Doll Maker
Hope to compare to His work
Love and life
Life and Love
The two are entwined
One without life cannot love
One without love cannot truly live
I doused the lamp
Shadows played across her face
She smiled at me
With that cruel, mocking smile
The smile I had made
Her clothes were torn and ragged
She looked the part of a scoundrel
Rather than the lady I made her to be
I turned from her
Retiring to bed
Lightning flared outside
The thunder echoed her laughter

- i love it too. i thought the doll would "come alive" too at first , but then i see the moral when the dollmaker understands something with no soul and heart can live. great theme!

- It's a lovely poem, but it lacks a certain...mystery that the topic of dolls-coming-to-life demands
