One is a little game called monster hunter freedom unite, which forms the basis of some of the characters. The other is an anime called Mushibugyo, which is what inspired the setting and feel of the story. Thanks once again.

This is a tale set in the land of the ancients, home to both the divine and the demonic. Hayato, a youth from the mountains sets out on a quest to fulfill his master and uncle's last wish, a quest that will take him straight into the heartland where the border between the realms is thinnest. Joining him in his quest is his ever faithful, albeit rude and uncivilized, cat named Kuro, a drunken swordsman named Masamune, and the beautiful yet highly clumsy and unfortunate priestess, Kyouka. What dangers await them in this world of Gods and demons?
