After that nice cold shower nothing could spoil the mood I was in at least that’s what I thought.
I was just about to take a swing of the coffee April had prepared for me when my cellphone started to blare to life with a solid ring. Sighing I walked over to my briefcase that was in my office adjacent to the kitchen reaching my desk I fumbled around in my briefcase for my phone finally retrieving my phone I didn’t have time to glance at the id that flashed across the screen so I answered, “Hello, Jessica Davidson …”
“Jessica, oh my gosh didn’t you hear?” The voice said frantically over the line.
“Didn’t I hear what?” I asked.
“How could you not have heard…?”
Getting annoyed with the unchanging direction of the conversation I interrupted her.
“What is it Alice I don’t have time for this right now,” I responding harshly.
“Jessica I don’t know how to tell you this, but…,” she said softly.
“But what?”
“It's April, she was rushed to the Hospital, I got a call from Megan, a couple of minutes ago....”
“Wait, Alice what do you mean April was rushed to the Hospital she just left here a couple hours ago,” I asked in faint disbelief.
“Oh, Jessica..,” she said ruefully, “there was...” she hesitated
“There was what Alice,” I asked not wanting her to continue, but needing to know what the heck is going on.
“There was an accident…..”That was all I heard. Nothing else registered for me, I could hear her continuing to talk, but I all I could register was the gut retching feeling in the pit of my stomach.
After a couple more minutes of not hearing anything from me I could hear Alice trying to get my attention.
“Jessica?”
“Are you there… are you okay… do you need…?”
“What hospital is she in,” I breathed.
“Providence Hospital, outside of 12th street…”
I know the one,” I interrupted, “Okay Alice I’ve got to go.”
“Yes, yes of course, just call me...” I hung up before she could even finish.
Hesitating for only a second I turned immediately running through the kitchen towards the front door, before opening it I cursed out loud returning to my office I snatched my purse up from my desk and ran back to the door and opening it, taking time only to lock the door before I went my car.
It seemed like I reached the Hospital in no time, but I know that if it hadn’t been for all the red lights I ran I wouldn’t be walking up to the information desk in the ER right now ten minutes later.
“Can I help you,” the receptionist asked in a pleasant voice, at least as pleasant as one could be as a receptionist in a Hospital.
“Yes, I am looking for a patient, she was in a car accident..,” I replied swiftly.
“Name?”
“April.”
“April what?”
“April Cassidy.”
“I am sorry, but that name is not showing up in my system are you sure...”
“Jessica?” looking up with irritation I saw Megan, April’s sister standing a few feet away from the information desk just outside the ER door.
Walking up to Megan, “Where is she, is she okay, what happened,” I couldn’t stop the string of questions from tumbling out my mouth.
Putting her hand to her forehead Megan responded,” She’s in surgery right now, she had some internal bleeding; it was a hit and run accident, and I don’t know if she’s going to be okay..” she broke off in a whisper tears began to form in her eyes. I looked away not allowing myself to go there just yet.
Grasping Megan’s shoulder, I gave her a slight shake saying, “She’s going to be fine okay,” I don’t know whether I was saying that for her benefit or my own. She nodded whipping hers eyes, “where is she,” I asked.
“They are operating on her upstairs,” she replied in a small voice.
“Can you show me,” I asked softly.
“Yes of course.”
Reaching the 5th floor of the Emergency surgery department I followed Megan pass another information desk of ER where a volunteer worker was busy assisting a couple telling them that they would have to wait to till the surgery was over and they would be notified. Continue to follow Megan we walked through the double doors making a right down to the end of the hall to waiting room one for ER surgery visitors. Inside the waiting room there was only two occupants in the room one of whom I recognized. One occupant, a women was quietly reading a magazine in the corner. The other was leaning forward with his hands covering his face. They both glanced up as Megan and I entered. The other occupant went back to her quiet reading, but the other one rose swiftly out of his chair instantly approaching me.
“Dad,” Megan said in a cautious tone.
“What the heck are you doing here,” he addressed me with resentment.
“Mr. Cassidy...”
“You have no right to be here.”
“I know my rights and if I want to ...”
“No, no let’s get one thing straight you may have somehow corrupted my daughter into your immoral ways but that does not give you the right to just show up here.” he bellowed, pointing his finger in my direction. The women that had been in the corner reading her magazine looked up intrigued by the sudden entertainment.
“I love your daughter and I know she wants me here, and I have all the right to be here.” I spoke louder, making sure I was being clear.
“Look here you dyk...” He said harshly, before he could finish Megan stepped forward putting herself between me and her father.
“Dad,” Megan cried raising her hands in frustration, “now is not the time please.”
He opened his mouth to say something else, “please dad not now,” taking a deep breath he turned away from both of us walking, not back to his chair, but instead to stand looking out the window of the waiting room. Megan with a sigh and quick look my way walked over to stand next to her father, where they began to speak back and forth softly, but in rough voices, I didn’t pay attention to what they were saying instead I walked over to the other side two seats away from the women that had gone back to reading her magazine after the show had finished.
Taking a seat I leaned forward closing my eyes and resting my head in my hands. There I let the murmurs between Megan and her father, and the turning of the magazine pages two seat away from me fade into the background. There realization started to sick in; will April be able to survive this…?
