"How could this be?! I was sure I had all the science correct. Had I forgotten something? No, of course I haven’t! I couldn’t have. I checked all of my work about twenty times! How could not a single one of them have wings? Maybe Charlotte was right. Maybe I wasn’t meant to be a scientist." a strange man that looked somewhat like Einstein exclaims. He wasn’t exactly the first thing I wanted to see in my life.
I had only been alive for a few days at the time, and I seemed to already understand so much. I seemed like an impossibly genius newborn! I think it was because the strange man was trying to teach us all. He said something about having the brain and intelligence of an adult human. I looked around and noticed many other creatures silently laying down, staring at the old man. Some were cats, dogs, foxes, and most were wolves. There was something strange about them, though. They all seemed to have odd-looking, bumpy shoulders. I was very tired, so I just decided to ignore it and curl up into a little ball to take a nap.
When I woke up, I was in a cage by myself. It looked as if I were in a kennel, but nicer. It didn’t stink and it was kept clean enough. I howled and waited for a reply. I heard a soft meow behind me. Apparently I wasn’t alone. I turned around and found the tiniest cat, stretched out on a white towel. "Hello. My name is… is… Come to think of it, I don’t really know. I see your name is Sunni, though. It’s on your collar," I say with an attempt at a smile. "Sunni? That’s a nice name. I didn’t notice I had a collar and a name. But you have one, too. It says that your name is Radiance," she replied softly. "Oh, I am wearing a collar! Silly me, I didn’t notice either! By the way, I love your pelt! It’s so colorful!" Her pelt was peach with different shades of pink and a few vibrant markings. Mine was only different shades of blue and gray.
"Do you have any idea what we’re doing here or who that strange man in the lab coat is?" I ask. "Nope, but hopefully we can leave soon. Rumors are going around that outside of here, it’s beautiful! They say that there are green trees and wildflowers growing everywhere! I don’t know who started it, but I think I believe them! What if somehow, someone managed to escape at least for a little while and explore?" she says. "Wow! It sounds amazing. Do you think that someday we will be able to get out of here and see if the rumors are true?" I say, now anxious to escape. "All I know is that if the man doesn’t let us out, we’ll just have to find a way out. A group of some of the others is working on our plan now. Someone thinks they’ve seen the group of keys he uses to open the cages." Right that moment, I just knew it was going to be an exciting life for Radiance the wolf (or whatever I was). Years have passed since then, but we still haven’t found the perfect time to escape.
