• The One I Must Protect
    Chapter One

This morning would start up like every other morning. Eda would wake up early and start making breakfast. In my sleep I can always smell the the bacon all the way in my room. I could also smell the sweet cinnimon aroma of her pancakes. I knew the reason why she made her pancakes, it was the first day of the new month. She would only make those on the first day of the month, but that also ment that there is a lot of work to be done today. The monthly celebration around the cheery tree.

Also like every other morning, I would put up a fuss about getting out of bed. She would shake me, pull the covers off, and/or shake the with her foot. But really the only way to get me up is to scream at me to get up.

    "LAIM"

But the thing is that when she screams to wake, she screams right into my ear.

"Your breakfast will get could if u sleep to long... You need all the energy you can get for all the set up for tonights celebration.."

I eventually made my way to the table and started to eat. I wait every month for these pancakes. When my mother was alive she would do the same thing every month. When she died, Eda thought that she should keep going on with that tradition mother would always would do.

After the breakfast was eaten and the dishes were wash and put away, we got ready and headed out. We began to help out everyone with the decorations and everything. Eda was on babysitting duty like she normally is, but she always likes to make up stories for them and the children like them a lot, too. Eda told me that one day she would like to write stories, mostly for children. Every time she just makes it up as she goes along.

After long hours of the day, everything was ready. The food and drinks were being brought out and set up. The first thing everyone did was eat. After that, some people got instruements, like drums and fults, and began to play and then the giant fire was set ablaze. Me and Eda desided to sit down for a moment to get a break after a long day, but our rest didn't last as long as we wanted. Some of the older men desided to come by and hand me a mug of beer and one slaped me on the back.

    "Go on and drink up."

    "No thanks... I'm fine.."

"One little sip won't kill you... Your 19 right... Heck if they draft kids as young as 16 into the war then I don't see why it would be a bad thing for you to have a mug."

Those men laughed loudly and you could easily smell the alcohol on their breath. I have alway hated the way people's breath smelt like when someone drinks. They tried to offer Eda a mug but they would listen to her when she said that she didn't want one. Some of the younger children came over to Eda and pulled her over to there little dance circle.

For a long while it was just like the celebration we have every month. I would just sit there and watch everyone have a good time. I closed my eyes for a moment and when I opened them I saw a hand held out to me. I looked up to see Eda's smiling face.

"Lets dance... I think that you should at least do something this time.."

"No thank you.. I'm fine just sitting right here.."

The next thing I know she pulls me up and drags me along.

"I want you to have some fun for once.."

She was right for 2 years all I have been doing is worrying about not being found by the soldiers and being draged off in to a pointless war. No one really knows why this war was started. Some say that one of the noble children were kidnapped by a rival family or because of the egos of the family that started it. No one really has a clue about what had started it.

    "Take the lead okay.."

I looked around at the other people to see how it was done and tried to copy them. It was a fail. I either stepped on her foot several time or even on mine. After a few mintues of looking like a fool, she finally stopped me and made me relax. After that it became easier to dance.

It all felt right for all those moment, but just like that the atmostphere changed. I could hear the clanking of metal over and over, like a march formation. We all looked over to see the flag that bared the noble family crest.

    "Set fire to it all.."

When that command was given, the soldiers threw torches at the houses and they began to burn. The villagers began to run and scream in panic.

"Take the children.. Kill the rest.."

I could hear the screams of everyone. They took the children put them in a type of cart. As for everyone else, some tried to fight back and other were trying to run away. I lead Eda to the hide away that we would always use. When we got there there was a man wearing a different type of armor and his sword was more ellagant than the others. He started to attack me and I fought back as best as I could, even though I didn't have anything to fight back with. I managed to get him to drop his sword, but he hit me in the head with some thing. As my vision began to darken the last thing I could remember seeing was Eda eyes full of tears and then a bright flash of light. Then just like that everything went black, thinking that this was it and that I failed to keep my promise to Eda that I would always protect her.
