Ommeric was not a mighty God. It would be safer to say that he was more of a no account God who's highest ambitions in life were to chase after female divinities and mortals, get drunk, and get out of work. However, he did once do an honest days work.
One day, while resting under an apple tree in Godshome to help avoid cleaning up the great hall of the Gods Ommeric became board. There was nothing really to do in Godshome but chores, and he spent as much time as possible trying to get out of them. Ommeric began to ponder, "If there was only another world full of interesting people for me to spend time with and to escape the gaze of Salven the Mighty who always tries to get me to work."
Ommeric sat under that apple tree and considered what he would need to make a whole new world. The list of things was getting so long he started to get a headache. He said to himself, "I should just go out and get what I need from the other Gods. Since they are all busy doing their chores they shouldn't notice if I take what I need. It's not like they'd notice, and if they new I was making a new world they would likely agree to help." Having convinced himself that this is what the Gods really wanted Ommeric set out to gather what he needed to made a world.
Fist, he deiced, what he needed would be water. He knew just where to find some too. He went to the home of Dother, the God of the seas. Dother rules the depths of all oceans and the hidden lives and treasures that lie within the deep. Ommeric didn't knock on the front door; instead he slipped around to the side and went in through Dother's window. "Now where is his fish tank?" Ommeric asked himself. He was so preoccupied with finding the tank that he quite forgot to keep a lookout for Dother who decided to come home at that unfortunate moment.
"Oh lazy Ommeric, why have you broken into my house this time? Are you after my treasured pearls and lost treasures again," demanded Dother who was quite upset at finding Ommeric in his home.
"I just wanted to borrow an ocean or two," replied Ommeric, "and since I knew you'd be out doing your chores with the other Gods I thought I wouldn't bother you." Ommeric at least thought he was being honest. People do so tend to forget that others might want to use their things, and it's often easier to get it if you don't ask for it.
"What do you want my oceans for Ommeric, and when are you going to return them," asked the frustrated Dother. He knew that if he didn't get strait answers from Ommeric that he might never see his beloved oceans again.
Thinking fast on his feet Ommeric replied, "I am making a present for all the gods to enjoy. I need a few oceans to give it the kind of sparkle one can only get from the shining of light on the deep waters. I'm certain that if I could only finish my gift everyone would be happy with it."
Dother was concerned. Ommeric was making too much sense. So he said, "You may have an ocean or two Ommeric, but if I dislike the gift you're making I'm taking them back." So saying he gave Ommeric a few oceans, lead him out the front door, and slammed and locked it behind him.
Already having forgotten his promise to Dother, Ommeric began looking for the other things his new world would need. "My world will need dry land for the mortals to walk around on, so it's off to see mother," thought Ommeric. His mother was Juenny who was the mother of all the Gods, and Goddess of the Earth. "I just hope she's visiting father Salven, or too busy with her chores to notice if I stop by for some of her Earth." Thinking this to himself as he tucked the oceans into his pockets he set off for Juenny's home.
Juenny's home is the birthplace of the Gods. Deep beneath the roots of an ancient oak tree she lives in an earthen cave, here she came into being, and gave birth to the Gods. Her husband Salven was born in an acorn and that's how they came to know each other, and bring about the Gods. Ommeric knew that there was only one way in, and that was through the entrance of the cave. Ommeric's luck wasn't with him however, Juenny was home.
"Why are you here my laziest and youngest child," asked Juenny. The Divine Earth Mother knows and loves all growing things, but Ommeric can even get on her nerves.
Thinking quickly Ommeric replied, "Mother I am making a gift for all the Gods and I need your precious Earth, with its fertile soil, ores, and stones to make it just right. If you don't like it you'll be able to take the Earth back when I'm done." Juenny agreed to his terms and gave him the Earth he needed for his gift. Quickly exiting the cave before she could change her mind he set out to find what else he'd need to make a new world.
"I suppose I'll be needing a Sky for this world, and that means dealing with Salven the Mighty, and I do so fear his warrior's temperament. Still it's what I need," thinking this to himself he put the Earth in his pocket and set out to Salven's home at the top of the tree. Salven is the God of War, the Sky, and Vision, as father to the Gods he rules with a light hand, and is known for his wisdom and strength. Ommeric climbed to the top of the oak tree to the home of Salven.
"Now if I was the Sky where would I be," Pondered Ommeric as he went through Salven's possessions. To his misfortune at that moment Salven walked in. Furious that Ommeric was going through his things, he drew his fearsome sword and approached Ommeric.
"Oh great Father," pleaded Ommeric, "I am making a great gift for all the Gods and need your Sky to make it just right. If you will just please just lend me your Sky I can make it just right, and if you don't like my gift I promise you can have the Sky back." Salven agreed and quickly sent Ommeric on his way before he could talk him into lending him anything else.
Quickly Ommeric set off with the Sky in his pocket. "Now I'll need Animals to populate my world," thought Ommeric. "I know who'd have Animals; I just hope she's not at home." With this is mind he set off to the home of Sethtome, Goddess of Animals. Sethtome often stalks the world in the form of a great cat, and like any cat she can be capricious. Ommeric walked quietly into Sethtome's home, a dense jungle teeming with life.
"Now where can I find the Animals that my world will need," pondered Ommeric. While he was looking for Animals he walked right into Sethtome. "I cry your pardon oh great Sethtome," groveled Ommeric while trying to think of a way to keep Sethtome from tearing off his head. "I am making a gift for all the Gods and your Animals are the most important part, and if you don't like the gift I'll give them back to you." Intrigued Sethtome gave him some Animals for his gift, and sent Ommeric on his way.
Quickly running to his apple tree Ommeric pulled all the parts of his world out of his pocket. First, he took the Oceans and placed the Earth on top of it. Next, he shaped the world into a more pleasing form, "It should be an interesting place with mountains, deserts and the like," he reasoned, and shaped the land to his whims. Then he tried to place the Sky over the world, but it fell down and leveled his mountains. Reshaping his mountains he put four of Sethtome's great serpents at each corner of the world to hold up the sky. Then he spread Animals across the face of the world without much care as to what ended up where, and to this day some can only be found is remote parts of the world. He looked out over his world, but he wasn't pleased, things were still missing.
"This world needs people," he thought and so he carved men and women from the apples from his tree and set them into his world. "It's still not enough," thought Ommeric, "This world needs a sun and moon." He plucked six golden hairs from his head, balled them up and placed them in the sky. Once set into motion it would bring day and night to his world. Then he skinned an apple to be the moon, but he went off to the bathroom and the moon was chewed on by the bugs and worms, being too lazy to skin another apple Ommeric set this pockmarked apple into the sky.
Having long since forgotten his promises to the Gods Ommeric breathed life into his world and entered it. To this day he wonders the world looking for interesting things to do and people to have a good time with. He is still lazy and seeks simple pleasures for as little work as possible. Strangers should always be welcomed with a simile less they be Ommeric in one of his countless forms looking for fun.
The other Gods however, remembered Ommeric's promises and all went to his apple tree looking for the gift he promised to make for them. Each of the Gods knew in their hearts that it was unlikely that lazy Ommeric had done anything worth while and they would need to take their gifts back. Instead, they found his apple tree, and a few half-made human figures, but no sign of Ommeric. A cry for blood went up for Ommeric, who stole all the gifts the Gods had to give.
While looking for some sign of him they found the world he had spent so much time and energy making. Each of the Gods was secretly pleased with this unexpected gift, but having been so angry with Ommeric they couldn't admit that he had made an interesting world. Each instead spoke at length about what a nice world had been made with their gifts. Soon however, a fierce debate broke out over what contribution to the world was the most important. Each God wanted to believe that they were the most important God in existence and without Ommeric to tell them which gift was the most important they could only fight with each other. It was Juenny who said, "While I am happy with the world the fighting its caused makes me think we should all take our gifts back. We should continue to look for Ommeric," but there was no sign of him anywhere in Heaven.
In the end they decided that the only thing they could do is rule the world he made until they could find him and demand their gifts back. The Gods have been kind and deserve our respect. Dother, the God of the Seas provides us with fish and lost treasures. Juenny, the Mother Goddess provides us with the very Earth and its bounty. Salven, God of War, the Sky, and Vision provides protection and wisdom. His noble sword gives our warriors the strength to fight for their homes and our hunters the strength to find game. Sethtome, Goddess of Animals provides us with Animals domesticated and wild. It is only from her sufferance that there is milk to be drunk and meat to eat. As rulers of the world the Gods have given much to us and they need to be given the honors due to such kind rulers of Sky, Ocean, Earth and Animals.
However, it was Ommeric who made and shaped our world, and humanity, even if he hasn't done a day's worth of work before or since. We must remember to show kindness to all strangers because they might be Ommeric in one of his countless disguises. He needs to continue to walk the world so the Gods can never find him, and never force him to give back the gifts he made the world from back to the Gods.
