• “Shh…follow me, over here quickly,” My voice whispered into the fog that lay around me. My following friend was trying to keep up with my pace in silence. We were almost to the gates.
“Miss Lucretia please, do be of caution. If Prince Viktor finds out we are out here it will be the gallows for the both of us tomorrow!” She urged.
“Then no longer speak until we reach the fields. He would not have his matrimonial companion sent to the gallows. Help me with this gate.” I tried to unlock the gate gently. Amelia helped in keeping the opening of it as silent as death himself. I glanced back at the castle before I started off. Its large hard glass windows were blanketed by darkness. Quickly I ran, with Amelia trailing behind.
We ran down the stone road making our way towards the fields. “Where are we going tonight?” She questioned nearly out of breath.
“Do I ever really know?” I chuckled and ran faster, getting myself as far from the castle as I could.
“No you never do. Let’s just not make this an all-nighter; I have errands to do early tomorrow. You must be the worst wife in the history of this family. The shame you would bring them if they ever read your mind.” She taunted in a motherly way.
“I make a great wife! A strong individual one, however I still love my husband. Does that not amount to anything?” I spoke casually.
“Least someone besides his mother likes him. Least the gods have that on their side.” Amelia joked with herself.
I stopped running; we reached the fields. I climbed over the small stone wall clumsily in my flowy dress. The fields near the castle, in which I lived, were vast and hilly. No trees lay among these hills. Behind them in the far distance lay rows and rows of mountains. The stars were brighter than ever tonight, almost as bright as they were on the night of my wedding a few weeks back. It was very cold for an October night. The brisk air had finally caught up with me; I began to shiver.
“The forest is not far ahead.” I pointed out. My night sight was very strong, thought it was supposed to be for creatures like me. We reached the outskirts of the trees. I was the first to step into the brush and darkness. Cautiously Amelia followed. Upon stumbling into a clearing I noticed a figure of a human lying among the dead-leaved floor.
“There is someone there.” I whispered. Amelia stopped dead in her tracks.
“Do not question their existence. Leave them be!” She motioned.
“What if they are hurt or dying? Let me just go make sure.” I walked closer.
“What if they are evil or a trap?” Amelia nearly screamed. I flared at her and walked completely over to the person. “You’re asking for death.” She mumbled under her breath.
“Hello? Are you okay?” I asked aloud. No one answered back. I was standing next to them at this point. It was a mere boy of my age. He was lying motionless; I nudged him slightly so not to startle him. He did not wake. Kneeling by him I felt for his pulse. His skin was deathly cold. Though very faint a pulse remained slowly. I looked at the rest of him. His attire told me that he was a farmer’s son from a neighboring farm. However there was a pool collecting by his side. He was bleeding from a large bite wound.
“Amelia he is hurt badly. He could die if we do not go and get help. Blood is pouring from a large bite wound on his side.” I announced. I put him on his back to get a good look at his body’s poor state. He was a skinny thing, though very tall. The hair on him was of an ash blonde, silky straight and shoulder length. The pallor of his skin was whiter than mine. I feared the worst. This poor soul would probably not make it through the night, even with help. I also noticed a large scratch on his other cheek. It was fresh and bucketing blood. “Amelia? Are you still there?” She was being awfully silent. Out of the silence I heard a whine of a horse. I spun around frightened. I now faced Prince Viktor and his men on horses. Amelia was turning green.
Viktor’s face was stern and empty. “What are you doing here?” Everyone stared at me. I back up almost falling backwards onto the boy.
