Kevin opened his eyes to see Jane’s worried face. He blinked.
“Are you okay?” she asked anxiously. He found the strength to smile, “I’m fine, love.”
She blinked, “Excuse me?” He blinked too. What had he just said? But it didn’t feel wrong to call her that… “I,” he stammered, “I called you ‘love’.”
“Why?” she asked incredulously. He shook his head, trying to clear his mind, “I don’t know. I just did… I’m sorry if it offended-“
“No!” she interrupted suddenly. She blushed, “I mean… I’m not offended.” He sat up and she moved out of the way. He asked, “So… what time is it?” Jane looked around for a clock. She stood and went into her bedroom where her alarm clock was. She called out, “Its seven thirty!” Kevin stood hurriedly, murmuring curses to himself. “If you,” Jane started, walking out of her room, “are an angel-“
“I was an angel,” Kevin corrected her. She smiled, “If you were an angel, how come you say curse words?” He stared blankly at her.
“Are you saying you actually believe words have meaning unless someone besides yourself can feel the emotion or meaning behind it?” he asked. She blushed, “No. I’m just saying…” Kevin smiled, “Don’t worry, love. I understand what you mean. No, curse words aren’t bad at all. Now, I’m late for my appointment.”
“But you’re an angel,” Jane protested, “What could you have an appointment for?” Kevin flashed a bright smile at her, “I’m not an angel anymore.” She rolled her eyes. He just chuckled, “I understand what you mean. I have an appointment with my doctor. While I’m down here, on Earth, I have to have a physical body and be a normal person. Well, at least some of the time.” Jane hesitated before asking, “Why were your wings taken away?” A shadow fell over Kevin’s eyes for a minute before they picked up their usual light, “Well, sometimes you can’t help it when things go wrong.” Jane frowned, “But… what went wrong?” He sighed, already tired of the discussion, “I would rather not tell you.” A nag in the back of his head told him to open up to Jane, but he kept control. “Well,” he smiled, “I have to go.” Jane spoke up before he turned to the door, “Could I walk you outside at least?” He smiled at her, “Why not?” She relaxed, “Let’s take the elevator.” They were on the sixth floor… “Okay,” Kevin agreed.
So they went into the vacant elevator. “So,” Kevin said, trying to open up a conversation, “why don’t you have a boyfriend?” Jane smiled at him, “I already told you, I think. I tell people I have one. I lie.” Kevin frowned, “But why?” Jane retorted, “Why did you get your wings clipped?” They watched each other for a minute, silent communication going through to each other. “Okay,” Jane said, “You asked first so… Not too long ago, maybe three years ago, I had a wonderful boyfriend. In fact, we had loved each other since eighth grade. We were deeply in love with each other… but three years ago, he was driving to my apartment to pick me up for a date-“ Abruptly and violently, the elevator shook for a second and stopped. The lights went out. The music in the background stopped. It was dead silent. “Oh great,” Kevin sighed, “It looks like we have enough time to explain ourselves.”
