• Okay, so if you know greek mythology, then you know the story about Athens. According to the myth, when Athens wasn't named, Poseidon and Athena, god of the sea, horses, and earthquakes, and goddess of wisdom and crafts, competed to have the town named after them. Well, Athena created the olive tree for the citizens of Athens, and Poseidon created a saltwater spring. The people of Athens liked the olive tree better, and that is why Athens is called, well, Athens! Well, a little while later on Mount Olympus...

"Well, that wasn't fair!" Poseidon exclaimed to his brother, Zeus. "I mean, I like saltwater! They can fish in the spring!"

"I've heard that there's another town near by," Zeus replied, feeling aggravated. His brother always complained to him! "It's near the ocean, and maybe then the people in that town will favor you."

A couple days later, Athena hears about the town and decides to try and win the town's favor too.

"Hey! I had this idea first, Athena," Poseidon said.

"I've come to prove I am one of the best gods and goddesses there are," She replies.

"Then let the competition begin," Poseidon announces.

All the people of the coastal city gather around by the ocean shore, waiting for the gods to give their gifts.

First, Athena steps up. An owl, wise and tiny, springs out of her head, just like she did when Zeus had her.

"Aww!" the villagers cry. "It's so cute!"

"Beat that," Athena says truimpently to Poseidon.

    "I will!" Poseidon claims.

He summons a wave, and out of it's crest, springs forth a beautiful Palomino horse and a black Pegusus.

"These are two new speciese to the world!" Cries Poseidon. "You can ride them into battle, and they will provide means of travel, as well!"

The citizens come to a verdict: Poseidon won the town's favor. And so the greek coastal town was named after Poseidon.
