The Eldaris Chronicles
Prologue:
”They often spoke of how the dragons would travel among the stars, and take stories with them, but I never believed it, until now.” An old man looked up from an ancient looking desk, and then smiled. “For many millennia, the information contained within these scrolls was never revealed, you should consider yourself lucky to be reading even this” the man finished with a small chuckle, then got up from his chair. He wore a long dark blue robe, ending in a small curl at his feet. His hair was pure white, and almost seemed to radiate with light. “If you haven’t figured out for yourself yet, my name is Eldaris” His voice was of one who sounded much younger then he appeared. “I’m sure you’re wondering who, or what I am. Well…let’s just see about that.” He walked over to his desk again and knelt his hands upon it. “Many a millennia ago, I was a proud, and mighty dragon. Yes, a dragon.”
”Of course, I don’t look like one at the present time do I?” He stopped and seemed to be thinking deeply. He then looked up and smiled “I suppose I could always change back, but I’ll save that for later on in the story. For now, why don’t you get to work, you’ve got a lot to read!” The man chuckled again.
Chapter One:
Ansolarnia was always a peaceful place during the shining months. The bright star would shine forth and bring with it the life of many. The leaves and plants would begin to grow and take their destined colors, turning the great fields into one giant multi-coloured design. Khanorus had always had a particular favourite flower; a small blue one which shone with a radiance that even he, a dragon, admired.
The great gold dragon lifted his head as something came up towards him. He smiled as his mate, Shafelda came up to him. “Hello my dear, what brings you out here at this time, usually you are spending time with Melani, or I have judged the bright star’s light path wrong again.” She looked at him and smiled. “No, you are right, this is usually the time I am with her,” she looked back towards the mountains “But her and Grimst were needed by the council, so we decided we would speak tomorrow.” She looked at him still smiling. “And besides, are you not happy to see me?” she asked. Khanorus tilted his head around and touched his snout to hers. “Of course I am” he licked her and smiled “I was just wondering why you decided to join me out here, instead of checking on the egg, or did you do that on your way out here?” Her eyes opened a little more “oh, I knew I had forgotten something!” she exclaimed. “Excuse me, I will be back in a moment.” And with that, she opened her wings and started back towards the mountains.
Khanorus watched her go for a moment, then looked out into the fields once again. He never really understood the nature of such beauty. He would come out at this time every day and stare into the fields, always hoping to understand why the flowers grew as they did, and how they got their unique colors. Perhaps, he thought, they are like dragons, and receive colors based on their parents. But did flowers have parents? And if so, how did the parents get their colors? Some things were still a mystery, even to him.
The sound of wing beats made him look up again, but it was not Shafelda. Aryuizkia had descended upon the field some way away, then made his way over to Khanorus. “Greetings, Elder. How fares your field gazing today?” He bowed his head in respect to his leader. Khanorus walked over and returned the gesture. He was, in fact, the councils Elder, and was in charge of all that they did. The council has been around since long before anyone can remember, back when the first dragons sought out peace and good will. It was passed down from generation to generation, father to son, mother to daughter. IF the elder of the council had no son’s or daughters, then a new elder was picked from the council members. An elder could only serve for so long, before he was made step aside for a new elder to take his place.
”Same as always my friend, still leaves me pondering this mystery.” He looked back into the fields for a second, then turned back to the black dragon. “Now, what brings you out here of all times?” He asked. “Usually you are flying about the skies at this time.” The new dragon looked into Khanorus’ eyes and said briefly “Shafelda sent for me” he said lightly. “She wants you to know, it has hatched.”
********************************
”Khanorus! Oh, thank you Aryuizkia, thank you for finding him.”
Shafelda lay on the floor next to a small blue and gold dragon, who it appears, had just hatched from his egg.
Khanorus walked over and knelt beside his mate and looked into the eyes of his son, then he smiled. “What shall be his name?” Shafelda asked. Khanorus thought, then decided. “Eldaris” he said finally. She looked at him and smiled “Isn’t that…” she trailed off. “Yes, it is” he said smiling. He bent his head down and touched his nose to his son “Eldaris, my son.” Eldaris looked up and coughed slightly, letting out a small spurt of white flame. Khanorus, Shafelda, and Eldaris all smiled. Aryuizkia walked over slowly and knelt down himself. He looked at the baby dragon with a small smile on his face. “He will be quite the dragon someday Khanorus, I know it.” The gold dragon looked up at his friend “thank you, my friend. Your words mean much to me.” He nodded, and took some steps back and proceeded to leave so that the family could spend some time alone together.
Eldaris scratched the back of his head with one of his back legs and then looked up into his fathers eyes. He stumbled forward slowly and then moved directly in front of his parents. Shafelda smiled. “Patience, little one. You will have plenty of time to walk about.” Eldaris smiled and licked his mother and then walked up her leg, onto her back. He curled up slowly, and closed his eyes, and began to sleep.”
Khanorus began to yawn deeply, causing a deep rumbling to fill the chamber, then he smiled, looking at Shafelda. “Perhaps we should all get some sleep” he said. She looked at him “yes, better we rest, we can spread word tomorrow, if there is anyone who hasn’t heard already.” She too began to curl up on the floor. Khanorus walked over to the chamber entrance and looked into the fields again. Perhaps, some things are better left mysteries…for the time being. He crawled back into the chamber, laid next to his wife and son, and smiled.
