Chapter 75: Iron Cross
The Lord knew that the Hosts He had so carefully chosen wouldn’t be able to have more than one soul, it would overwhelm them. So it came to be that He would have to take the human souls away. The safest way to do such a thing was to kill the Nephilim and remove the soul, leaving room for the Guardians to enter. And he did just that. Struck the Nephilim down and let the angels come, and then raised them from the dead.
“You have to die first!” I yelled following Edan down the hall.
“Shhh, there are humans here too,” he said grabbing on to my forearm trying to make me quiet. “And it’s nothing you should be worried about. Don’t you have to attend a funeral tomorrow?”
That’s right Zúmú’s funeral is tomorrow. “Yes,” I shifted my eyes away. “But you’re the one telling me that you’ve died!”
“Well I am a vampire,” he flashed a cocky white smile, “but I was a Host long before that.”
“How long?” I questioned curiously hoping to get his real age.
“Not telling you, but you were alive when I became a Host so it wasn’t so incredibly long ago.”
“Wait so you’re telling me you’ve died twice!”
“Yes, and I’ve got one more death to go till I’m done. But none of this is something you should be worried about.”
I looked away still not out of questions, “Do I have a chance of becoming a Host?”
“Possibly,” Edan said continuing down the hall and letting go of my arm. I followed behind closely noticing how we would step in sync. “But this isn’t a life I’d want you to live. Trust me, Hai; you don’t know what I would give to see my name on a tombstone.”
“Don’t say that, Edan. I’d hate that, I’d be heartbroken,” I mumbled latching onto his arm.
Edan laughed, “I’d hate it if it were you too. So be careful ok?”
“I am careful, Edan. I no longer go anywhere alone, I don’t talk to strangers.”
“But you could be more careful.” He dug into his pocket and pulled out a string that held a metal cross from it. He pulled it over my head and flipped my hair back. “The iron keeps away vampires and fey as the silver does with werewolves. It’s been blessed with holy water which should take care of anything else.”
“Oh my God, it’s beautiful!” I ran by fingers across the large silver heart in the middle of the heavy iron cross. “How come the iron doesn’t affect you?”
“The fact that I am a Host makes me more immune to these things. If you were to get enough iron I would be affected.”
He opened the door to the English room and let me in as I pulled the necklace off. Sitting down in a chair I looked at him eagerly. Edan sat down next to me and I grabbed his hand, placing the cross in the palm of his hand. I leaned in and whispered, “Does that burn?”
“Barely.” I slipped the crucifix from his hand and pulled the twine back over my head and tucked it under the collar of my white shirt.
“But if I can’t see the fey why do I need this?”
“Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they won’t hurt you,” he said playing with the cross that hung from my neck.
“Why can’t I see them?”
“Well technically speaking you are human. Humans aren’t sighted- they don’t know what they are supposed to be looking at. If they did know they would be sighted. But it’s mostly those who were given the gift can see them.”
I looked away somehow blushing, “Can I see them? Isn’t there a way I can become sighted?”
“Yes, if that is ever needed you can be made sighted.”
I nodded, “Will I ever get attacked again?”
“Maybe, I can’t be sure. But if you ever do hopefully whatever it is will stay away.”
“And if they don’t?”
“Then I guess I will just have to come and save you.”
I laughed pulling my fingers back through raven feather black hair, “Good because if you don’t I’ll be screwed.
“You would be screwed.”
I rolled my eyes, “You’re lucky I like you or I’d be really angry.”
“I find that a bit insulting because while you like me I love you.”
I pathetically stared forward before responding. My mind in shock of what he said. “Edan I-I- I’m sorry I love you I just-”
He cut me off before I could finish with a laugh, “I know, I was kidding. Jesus are you always this spazy?”
“No… maybe… yes.” I muttered the words abashed looking away come to realize how stupid of a person I can be. “But I don’t enjoy the fact that one word you would used to describe me is spazy.”
“More than just spazy, you can be naïve, overly curious, stubborn, heedless of death, overemotional, childish, and worry full.”
Crossing my arms over my chest I narrowed my eyes into a stern glare and growled unhappily, “I hope you’re done, because I didn’t like that one bit. Talk about insulting. I thought when a guy loved you he was supposed to say stuff like ‘You’re beautiful, perfect, sweet, adorable- bla bla bla.’ Not point out your flaws.” I bit my lip and looked away, tapping my fingers on the desk, “Is it weird… you know… having a voice in your head?”
“Hell yeah,” Edan laughed, “Matoko is annoying and overly opinionated. But sometimes it’s not that bad.”
“Really?”
“No he’s pretty bad,” Edan shifted his eyes away before rolling them with a laugh. I gave a confused look. “Matoko is pissed off because I’m nice to you and not him.”
“You should be nice to me,” I smirked. The bell rang causing me to flinch and catch Cana walking over. I waved my hand in the air capturing her attention.
“Hey,” she smiled, “I lost you in the halls how’d you manage that?”
I laughed, “No idea.”
“Do you need to hold on to my hand when we walk down the hall so you don’t get lost?”
“…. Yes.”
Cana didn’t laugh and continued on with a straight face, “Or how about a child leash? Or maybe just a dog chain, I could walk you down the halls saying, ‘come here Hai. Good girl, come on, follow me.’”
“I’m not a dog, I’m stupid enough to be a sheep, but I’m not a dog.”
“Well then I just have to show you up and be a hamster. That’s right you just got burned!”
“A hamster, Cana, seriously?”
“Hey for all you know I could be a highly attractive hamster and all the other guy hamsters would want me.”
“I think I’ll leave you two alone,” Edan said getting up from his seat and Cana taking his place.
“Later,” I called. “So would you be like this round fuzzy thing?”
“The fattest and fuzziest.”
“Oh Lord.”
Cana laughed, “Don’t pretend that you wouldn’t want a piece of that. Hmm were you always wearing that,” she said fingering my cross.
“No.”
“It’s pretty cool, helpful against those mythical magical creatures that eat people in the middle of the night.”
“I don’t know I’ve always wanted to be eaten in the middle of the night by something.”
“No way me too!”
Thus the Hosts’ and their Guardians’ job protecting the Earth had begun. But after all these years it still hasn’t come to an end. The final generation still isn’t here.
I posed for this myself
I know this one is hard to see but its a hand drawn picture of Serenity and Chauncey who you will meet at the end of the book (I love those two!!!)
