• Soon my vision faded back into my mind but my head felt light and airy, I looked around without moving. I couldn’t move, even moving my head would probably cause pain. Jack saw my eyes moving apparently he stood up and straightened his shirt and stood next to whatever I was lying on. He smiled and touched my hand, and then he frowned.
“Why are you so strange?” he asked a curve arranging on his lips. I didn’t answer but I tried to with my eyes. He apparently got that I couldn’t tell him. He squeezed my hand slightly I cringed inside. Jack’s hand was warm on my skin and the pain resolved and I could move my fingers he moved them tapping his hand slightly. I opened my mouth relaxing my jaw, he touched my elbow and I cringed again and my chest warmed and I could breathe deeply. I breathed in and felt cold air touch my lips and fill my chest. I sat up a little bit I threw my legs on the side of whatever I was sitting on.
“Why are you so different?” Jack asked again knowing I had to answer this time, I looked down a curtain forming as usual.
“Does it really matter?” I muttered to his shoes
“Yes it does matter Janet.” Jack said moving the curtain over my shoulder.
“Where are we?” I asked avoiding the conversation he had started.
“We are in the hospital you were out for about a day.” He said he obviously wasn’t going to drop the subject
“What a day I’ve been out for a day?” I asked tensely I stroked my necklace like I always do when I’m stressed. I smelled the air it smelled like doctors, disinfectant, and old people. I noticed a cord in my arm and I tugged at it. An alarm went off and a thin beautiful long black haired woman walked in and spoke to Jack obviously scared of me. I must have done something during my sleep to scare the overworked woman.
She strode out the curtains, I messed with the cord and smiled it was very entertaining. Jack walked over and guided my hand to push the cord back in my skin.
“The nurse said you should keep it in it’s your…” he noticed my confused expression, “just leave it in it’s important.” I nodded
I stood up and stumbled I noticed I was wearing a hospital dressing. I wondered if he had stayed the night. I felt the paper dress and looked at the window I saw a bird’s nest with two yellow breasted finches’s sitting it chirping. I opened the window and touched the female one she hopped on to my finger she chirped. I cocked my head at her and smiled wide she cocked her head at me also. Jack moved up and went to touch the cute bird, she chirped and flew out the window. Jack frowned at his disconnection to wildlife. I giggled and he looked at me like I was being inappropriate.
“Sir, you need to leave your visiting time is up and another guest is here and says she needs to talk to the patient alone.” The beautiful woman looked even more stressed than before she looked just out of college. I whipped around as calmly as possible and she flinched, Jack started to walk away, I clenched his arm.
“Wait can he have just one more minute I need to ask him a question?” She nodded and pursed her lips she turned and walked out slowly apparently worried I was going to hurt someone.
“What did I do during my sleep?” I asked as quickly as possible knowing she’d be back sooner than a minute. Jack shrugged and turned slowly not hiding what he knew.
“All you did was mutter like usual and twitch your hand towards your necklace.” He said
“Are you sure nothing else?” I said rushing him.
“That’s all and you tried to get out of bed a few times.” He added
“Why did you bring me to the hospital?” I asked shaking my head and closing my eyes I released my grip. “Why?” I whispered
“Because you were hurt.” He said
“Was not I would have been fine!” I exploded rage coursing through me the nurse rushed in and made me lie down on my bed and said that Jack had to leave immediately for upsetting me. She tinkered with a few instruments next to me.
“I’m sorry for frightening you while I slept.” I whispered to her as she checked the cord in my arm. She looked up and frowned she seemed unhappy that she hadn’t concealed her fear.
“It is nothing it was just a bit strange.” She murmured her voice soft and comforting. I relaxed she seemed less stressed now that I looked at her.
She pushed hair out of my face and put tubes in my nose. It was very uncomfortable the tubes were plastic. She left the room after telling me not to mess with any of the cords or get up.
She shut the door behind her and walked in again with another person. It was a boy and he had short black hair and bright green eyes and a leather black jacket on and a pair of ripped up jeans that covered up his torn up sneakers. The woman backed out of the room and closed the door with a click.
“Hey heard you were in the hospital I didn’t think a girl like you’d end up in a swanky hospital.” He grinned and walked over obviously knowing I couldn’t get up out of the bed, the boy leaned over and gave me a hug and I held his back. I smiled and he let go. His hair falling back into it’s position of a hat.
“How do you hear about me all the time?” I asked him
“I’m Angeni I hear everything Hun.” He said gesturing his arms out and turning in a circle. I laughed and folded my hands together; Alex was such a good friend. He was so very nice and lighthearted.
“Angeni I don’t get it you always show up when I need you to.” I said looking at him happily
He shrugged to my statement he was always smiling.
“Angeni could you stay the night please, I don’t like it here?” I asked using my eyes to truly ask.
“Just tonight my mother is used to me leaving with the wind but she doesn’t like me leaving the tribe so often.” He said sternly. My mood brightened by a foot, I motioned for another hug. He gave me another warm hug and then sat on the chair.
