The Random Factor

Oh thank the gods of the Pixie's for the random factor, for without it my life would be dull as dishwater!

The random factor is something that only ever seems to happen when you get out there with no plan, no expectations and no money. It's that thing that if you look for it will never happen, if you sit at home waiting for it it will never happen and if you expect it to happen it just wont happen. It's that thing that starts out as a quiet evening in and somehow finishes up with you lying in a field at 3am several days later wondering what the hell just happened and where the heck did I leave the car?

How my head felt on Saturday night</center>

I've always been quite an unlucky person. Not in a "having a grim time" sort of way, but I never seem to be in the right place at the right time. I've always had to make things happen. They never just happen by themselves. I know so many people who live lives where opportunities just seem to fall into their lap and all they have to do is decide whether to take it or not.

I have friends like me too, who have to work damned hard for everything they get out of life.

At the end of the day, some of us are creators of mayhem and others just hop on for the ride.

You have to recognize when the right place and the right time fuse and take advantage of that opportunity. There are plenty of opportunities out there. You can't sit back and wait.

Saturday night was a disaster.

I'd planned everything out, I'd arranged to go and pick my hot date up from the town where he lives, got myself beautified and off I went in my car.

He didn't turn up.

Well, no skin off my nose, so I came home and resigned myself to yet another boring evening in Aberystwyth. There's not much to do here, unless you enjoy sitting in a hot crowded pub full of students. I mean, that's ok now and again but it does lose quite a lot of it's appeal after 10 years worth of weekends.

Later that evening I had a visit from a friend. She's another one like me who can't be arsed to wait for an opportunity, she gets out there and makes them. Before too long we were settled down with a nice cup of tea, both of us complaining about how boring Aberystwyth has gotten.

And then I planted "the seed of out".

Pixie-words
The Seed of Out

An idea of going out implanted into the brain of a potential partner in crime.
Works best when you both have no cash, no energy and work in the morning.
Once implanted this seed of an idea has a tendancy to grow into either the bush of mayhem or the tree of random.

Or if you're REALLY lucky, both.

My friend, totally skint, completely knackered and facing a week of grueling physical labour, turned out to be an ideal candidate for the seed of out. this was the start of the instigated mayhem and the ideal circumstances for "the random factor" to take over.

An hour later we were sat in a pub in a totally random town chatting to someone who my friend had met twice. Twenty minutes after that we were sat in a farmhouse kitchen in the back end of beyond, surrounded by people in cocktail dresses and suits playing roulette at the kitchen table for 2p's!

Which just proves my point totally. If that wasn't a totally random evening I don't know what is! Had my friend and I bothered to finish our cuppa, had we just settled infront of the tv and talked about all the things we'd rather be doing that would have been the end of the evening. I'd have had nothing to rant about in my journal today!

Resigning yourself to a boring life is only going to mean that you end up having a boring life. If you throw caution to the wind and just get in the car or on the bus or the train, or just even walk out of your front door you've made the first step and then the weird and wonderful randomness of the universe can just take over!

The secret is not to try and make it happen, not to go looking, but just to be happy with your lot and get out there and make the most of things!

The randomness will find you!
