Today I watched this very very sensual yet historical account of the mad queen of Spain, Juana la loca as part of my school organization's activities. It was a good movie filled with historical accounts, and what I like to think accurate portrayals of the Spanish during that era. Plus, there was a lot of time put in for a lot of sex scenes. eek
Anyhow, in what I saw in the movie, I don't think she was really as crazy as they portray her to be in history. I think she is merely a normal woman reacting to a trecherous and filandering husband. And in my opinion, her husband deserved what he got; that is to be with an increasingly insane wife over the years.
In the beginning, before she became ruler of Castile or Spain, I saw her as quite a timid young lady with doubts about her marrige with the future King Philip. I saw her as a pretty solid sane person. But then when she got married to, what they say, the most handsome king of Spain, she fell in love with him completely.
Strange how she thought she might not be able to love him in the beginning, and in the end love him so much she would go mad. It is one of the ironies I see in life as well. Nonetheless, I think her downfall started when her mother died. For this was the same day that she found her husband in bed with one of her ladies-in-waiting as well.
It sprouted the jelousy and rage inside her, as well as perhaps her uncontrollable passion already evident before she caught him cheating on her. (By this meaning she was asking for sex almost nonestop in the movie...O.o) Anyway, she had her husband tailed and watched his every move constantly. To him and some people she seemed to be going mad then.
Another trouble sprouted when her husband turned to a Moor mistress who apparently he met in a low class prostitute house. He made his mistress one of her ladies-in-waiting and that would eventually lead to the decoronation and imprisonment of the queen. It also convinced the council of nobles of her insanity.
By looking at what the movie has shown thus, it is quite plain to see the cause of her madness. I believe that it isn't love that caused this but her husband. He brought it upon himself with his habitual womanizing. I guess even in history it is applicable to say "you get what you deserve".
