“Hello Claudia.” Drake’s familiar voice sounded from somewhere in the shadows.
“Hello Drake. It seems this time I can greet you properly.” I kept my voice emotionless. I didn’t bother looking for him. I knew he’d just try to scare me.
“So it would seem,” he said from behind me. I wasn’t about to turn around. He’d only be gone. I’d watched too many movies involving the undead to fall for that one.
“Claudia, I wanted to let you know why you’re here.” He was still behind me. “I know very well why I’m here.” You needed a way to get to Louis. Apparently taking me was the best way. Or the only way you could think of.”
“I’ll let you in on why I need to get to Louis.” He was suddenly in front of me. I kept a cool face but he added, “I know you’re scared. You’re heart gives it away. I can hear it much better than even you can”
“I know you can.” I was still emotionless. “And I don’t care why you want to get to Louis. It’s your business. Plus, I’d rather hear it from him than a nosferatu like you!” I was yelling now for some reason.
“Your Louis is a nosferatu as well, girl” her hands were at the base of my throat and cutting off my breathing. I would have protested if not for that minor detail. “Your Louis is an evil Vampire. Don’t you dare think for an instant that he is innocent.” He hurled me to the ground. My body ached everywhere and my breathing was heavy. He glared down at me “I’m sure he was planning on killing you soon!” he kicked my side and a new jolt of pain rushed through me. He picked me up by my shoulder “You are a very naïve girl” as though on cue Phillip burst through the oak door and took me from Drake. He held me in his arms like I was a child. I knew I wasn’t seriously injured. I was just in shock. I hadn’t expected Drake to hurt me.
“You provoked him, didn’t you?" Phillip asked once the oak door had shut. I nodded weakly. He didn’t take me back to that God-awful torture room. He took me to a large guest bedroom. “Master Drake says you are to be treated nicely now.” He wiped a bit of blood off my lip and licked it off his finger. “He also suggests that you sleep.” Soon he was out of the door and locking it from the outside. Ok, so it wasn’t as bad at the dungeon, but I was still a prisoner.
I fell onto the unfamiliar bed sheet. It was gold and embroidered. It was all fluffy like the duck feathered ones. It was the exact opposite of my Corpse Bride comforter at home. That was dark and thin. The surroundings were different from my room too. My room was painted a gray. This room, even in the dark lighting the gold around me glowed. Good think through my whole stay hadn’t seen any electronic item. I was sure with light this room could blind me.
While I sat there I tried to tell myself that Louis would be there to take me away from that God-awful place. But half of me wanted him to stay away. Only because Drake obviously wanted to hurt him. I couldn’t handle even the thought of Louis being hurt. I tried to shake the thought of him cold and lifeless on the floor.
But then something Drake had said came back to me.
Louis was cold and lifeless. He was one of the undead. Louis, my Louis, was a vampire. More questions than ever about Louis came. The four most important were, how long had Louis been dead, did he want me blood, where was his lost soul devoted good or evil, and above all what had he done to Drake?
Great, that meant that much more time to spend with him.
At least that is if I even saw him again. I was afraid I would in that place. Where ever and what ever that place was.
I had apparently been sitting there for longer than I thought. It was dark outside when Phillip barged in and gave me a plate of food. But when the door was closed he ripped it from my hands and tossed it out the window.
“Hey! Why’d you do that I was hun-“
“Sh!” he cut me off and put a hand over my mouth. “That was poisoned. Now, I suggest you shut up. I brought more. So easy to judge the undead.”
“I didn’t judge Louis.” I said as he handed me an apple from his long trench coat.
“No, I wouldn’t have expected you to. You thought he was human. He’s very convincing as one.” He laughed.
“Wait, you know Louis?”
“Yes, we were brothers. At least in our vampire life. To tell you the truth me and Louis were like blood brothers too if he weren’t so much older than me”
“So that means Drake turned Louis, right?”
“Yes,” he seemed to be considering something. But he continued, “You see, Louis was changed when he was 16 in 1807. So, if he hadn’t already died he’d be about 216. He was on his own at the time. His parents refused to move to America from Ireland with him
“Drake found him half dead in an ally. He’d been beaten by Irish haters. When Louis started to stir Drake cut his wrist and let-rather forced- Louis to drink from him” he checked to make sure I wasn’t startled. But I wasn’t. I knew all too well how vampires came to be undead. “Well, soon Louis’ heart stopped. He became the first in Drakes extensive line. You’ve only seen the minority of them
“Anyway, when Louis discovered what Drake had make him he was pissed. He screamed and yelled for days. Finally Drake snapped and hit him. Since Louis was still really young and Drake was fairly old it did scar him. But not forever. Only a hundred years or so.
“Louis and I met around 30 years ago when I was 15. Louis and I were both wandering arounf at night. My mother was pregnant and I had runaway. I didn’t want a sister.”
“That’s no reason to run away”
“For me it was. Now, I know it wasn’t. If I hadn’t run away you’d be living a normal life.”
“How could you have possibly affected me I wasn’t even alive when you ran away.”
“I know. You were still in our mom’s stomach”
“Our mom?” I questioned.
“Yup. We’d be living normally if I hadn’t left” he sighed.
“I’ll scold you later. Tell me the rest of the story.”
“Ok, anyway, Louis and I became best friends. Only separated by the day. When I learned that he was a vampire I wanted to become one too. I told him if he made me a vampire he could have my soon to be born sister. ‘Why would I want your sister?’ he asked. ‘I don’t know. For food for a bride. As something to torture. What ever you want’ I told him. He laughed, but I could tell he was angry, only because I didn’t understand the full weight of my desicion. But eventually he gave in and took me to Drake.
“When we got to his castle, which is where we are now, I was now realizing what I was about to put myself through. But I wasn’t going to back down now. When I first met Drake, I felt likehe was someone who would take care of me. But after my transformation, I came to terms with the fact that everything IO thought about vampire was wrong. For one thing we can’t turn into fog. Maybe a bat but only if we’re old enough.
“Back to the story. Louis didn’t mean for me to actually become nosferatu. He was expecting me to back down. He got angry. This time not at me. This time he got angry at Drake for not keeping to their plan. In front of Drake’s own eyes he killed the second in Drake’s line. That vamprie happened to be Drake’s mate. Now it was his turn to be mad
“Louis ran away and didn’t look back. He came across Emma, who was wandering for a reason not even she knows. Anyway, I hear a few years back they picked up a little girl vampire. I believe her name is Lucy. She’s used as bait for them.”- that meant I was supposed to be killed and used a food. Great! Well, I’m glad Louis saved me from that fate- “She’s much older than she looks. She's probably actually around your age.” He smiled at me.
That was certainly a lot of explaining. There were a lot of questions answered and few raised. But mostly that story kinda weirded me out. There were a lot of things I didn’t know about Louis. Or about myself. I had a freaking brother and didn’t know it. One thing I tired not to say came out anyway. “So, you’re really kinda old huh?”
“Well, yeah, I would be 30 if I hadn’t died when I was 15. Wow, my heart hasn’t beat in 15 years.” He chuckled and put his hand on mine to show ho cold it was. I knew that cold feeling. I got it every time Louis touched me. They were both unnaturally cold. But that’s how vampires are. Unnatural.
Before I could ask any more questions, Phillip was gone. Curse, that nosferatu speed. I lay on the bed a while and finally fell asleep.
I was standing on the balcony of my room in Drake’s Castle. Phillip was next to me. He was muttering something, but I couldn’t understand it. He smiled and grabbed my hand. Suddenly we were falling, but Louis, who was on the ground waiting, caught us. As we began to run at vampire speed I noticed a figure in the distance. When we got closer I realized it was Drake.
“Come to me my children,” he cooed. Louis and Phillip snarled at him. Vampires can growl and even though I knew that was a dream, it was the most menacing and protectively scary thing I have ever heard.
Louis put me down. In an instant he and Phillip were gone and so was Drake. I instinctively looked around for them.
Then there was a thud behind me. I whirled around to see Drake looking confident and Louis and Phillip on the ground in front of him. Bloody. And finally really lifeless. The two people who I loved. My dearest brother whom I’d only just met. And my Louis. My Louis. My brother. Drake had to die. I lunged at him and just as I was about to make contact he hit me away with his hand and I went flying into the ground. I looked up to see Drake smirking over me. I snarled and jumped at him again. But this time I hit him and he tumbled backward and fell hard on his head. He jumped back up and now he was flying at me. I duck-
In that moment I woke up. Just when I thought I was going to kill Drake, I woke up. It still wasn’t quiet. Even in the middle of the night. Of course not. That’s when vampires thrive.
I found that my door was unlocked. Phillip probably forgot to lock it. Vampires rushed through the hallways. I walked in the middle of them, trying to blend in. They were only slightly paler that me, so I fit in nicely.
