If you know about Fairy Tail skip down to the dotted line.
If you don't know what Fairy Tail is it's a great manga that reminds you of One Piece to some degree only instead of pirates you get mages and magic and a lot of fighting. It's done by the same person who gave us Rave Master, Monster Soul, and more. Look it up and read up on it a bit.
Now one type of mage is a Stellar Spirit mage with the magic capabilities to summon spirits from the gate of spirit realm as long as they have their key and have a contract with that spirit. In the manga there are two type. Silver keys which are common and gold keys which are rare and there are only 12 of them. To get a better idea go here to the wiki.

So to add to the list the captain has made up Jade Keys based off the Chinese Zodiac. After taking forever to decide I finally settle on being a stellar spirit mage after the jade keys; which weren't fully described or decided on yet and figured I'd help him out with it since I can be very creative and stick to how things are with Fairy Tail. My idea was to make the animals based off animals from Chinese legends and folklore.
But today when I was going to submit some of my ideas I see that my offer to help was basically ignored by the crew member and something else was submitted. And when I say something else it's really...well you'll see what I mean. I submitted mine and for now they are in use, subject to change and I don't mind if it is.
I'm going to show you first what he put down and then what I had thought up.
Jade Keys
Rat
Quote:
Summons a spirit in the form of a rat that specializes at scouting and spying.
Haven't found a good one for this one yet. It's a bit hard to find stories on the rat save for how the zodiac came to be.
Hare
Quote:
Summons a spirit in the form of a rabbit that can grant the summoner a slight speed boost of +5 per rank of the stellar mage. Also able to quickly locate the safest path of escape.
~Okay if you didn't know the spirits has absolutely no effect on the summoner except that it takes energy to be summoned and will stay as long as the summoner has the power to call them/hold them there.~
Yuètù (Moon Rabbit) A small quick and agile rabbit who wields a kine(mallet) and has a mortar strapped onto her back. She can make mochi out of life water that can help heal/restore the health of the consumer.
Monkey
Quote:
Summons a monkey that increases the reflexes of the user by +10 per rank of the stellar mage.
Sun Wukong (Monkey King) a great martial arts fighter who wields a red staff that can change length. Arrogant and a bit hard to control if you don't know how to appease his ego. If not he'll spend a majority of his time arguing with the summoner contract be damned.
Rooster
Quote:
A useful stellar spirit that specializes in exorcism. It's call is known to herald the sunrise and disperse evil. Able to cancel curses of ranks equal to the stellar mage.
~So far the best he's come up with in my opinion. I'm willing to add the purifying nature of his rooster and have her fight with light instead of wind~
Fenghuang (August Rooster) A beautiful tan woman (Despite the rooster name) dressed in orange and yellow colors with many feathers in her back swept cockscomb styled hair. Fights with her feather which causes strong gusts of wind. A friendly rival of sorts with the Snake. The female equivalence to the dragon. She's the bringer of good fortune and luck. (I know I mixed up the rooster with the fenghuang and roc bird it's some of these are hard to find!)
Horse
Quote:
One of the most popular jade keys after the Rat, snake, and dog. This summons a spirit horse that can be ridden like a normal horse.
~Then why not ride a normal horse?~
Ma miàn (Horse-Face) A large strong looking person (believed to be male) who looks like he's creepily dressed for trick or treating or something akin to it, wearing a horse-head mask and armor wielding a tiger fork. He is physically one of the strongest and creepiest of the Jade spirits since he never speaks though communicate wells with body language. Best friends/brother/or lover to Ox.
Ram
Quote:
A stellar spirit that summons a ram which acts as a shield for it's summoner. Following them and using it's large horns to block attacks. Each attack blocked drains the summoner's magic power instead of their health.
~I haven't seen a spirit that was specifically used as a shield. It's been mentioned before that the spirit isn't a shield but who knows there might be one out there like that.
Shānyáng (Goat/mountain sheep) A small teen or boy, looks like a runt with black wool, hoofed feet, and horns, wears a bell around his neck. Timid, cute, and very friendly. Despite his small size he does his all to please and is surprisingly a good fighter (His looks allows him to be underestimated). Has a very strong head butt attack. A cousin of sorts of Aries, his powers are similar to hers except he adds a clumsy sort of boxing moves with his.
~An added note, okay the only story I found about a ram/goat/sheep was Sòng Dìng Bó sells a ghost. And I don't think the ram/sheep turning into a ghost was a really decent thing for this one.
Ox
Quote:
A spirit that increases the summoner's stamina for a limited time. Gives +10 to stamina for each rank of the stellar spirit mage.
~I swear I'm reading a yugioh boost card or something~
Niú Tóu (Ox-head)- A large looking person (believed to be female) who looks like she’s going trick or treating or something akin to it, wearing an Ox-head mask and armor wielding a giant hammer (not the tool but the weapon). Best friends/sister/or lover to Horse. Like Horse she is equally creepy and silent though she seems to express herself more with her body language than Horse.
**See Horse for special teamup move**
Tiger
Quote:
A popular but expensive spirit that summons a large tiger that will attack those targeted by the summoner. This tiger increases in size for each rank of the summoner and is the size of a small house for S rank and higher mages.
Bái Hǔ (The white tiger)- The king of the beast Bái Hǔ an anthro tiger whose fur has turned white. Powerful and strong he is a graceful and patient martial artist. His claws are sharp and he fights using sonic vibration transferred through the air waves and direct touch able to make even his roar a powerful attack. As the king of beasts he is able to communicate and command most animals though even for him some are rather stubborn.
Dragon
Quote:
The rarest and most powerful of the Jade keys, this summons a spirit dragon that is capable of transforming briefly into a true dragon of any type for three rounds in exchange for all of the user's MP. May not be used by mages under rank B and maintains the form for an additional round for each level of B. Lasts 6 rounds for an SS ranked mage.
~I can understand what he's up to with this by limiting the use of the spirit. But it's a bit silly to make it so strong or the most powerful when usually the spirits are all of moderate strength. So far as I've seen it all depends on how well the mage uses them and strategize with them as well as how much power as a mage that person has. I mean a silver key spirit the Chisle managed to take out two gold spirits so what does that say about them?~
Lóng Wáng (Dragon king)- A beautiful man who floats a few feet off the ground, he stands with his shirt off revealing a coiling tattoo of his true form that reaches from his stomach, chest and back and maybe further down if he wasn't wearing pants. His means of attack are water based given that he controls water from the rain to seas. He is kind and benevolent but when severely angered he can float a city without trouble. He is strong and usually careless mages loses right to his key within a day since they carelessly use him resulting in floods and their arrest ending the contract.
Boar
Quote:
A key that summons a boar spirit capable of granting the user great strength increasing their strength by +10 per rank of the mage.
Another I haven't fully found anything on except for Pigsy from the Journey to the West story, but everytime I try to think of something I keep getting Oolong from Dragon Ball stuck in my head.
Dog
Quote:
A stellar spirit in the shape of a dog, the type of dog may be chosen by the owner but it has no unusual characteristics beyond the shape being flexible.
Fu (Foo Dog) A large steel foo dog/lion he's a great guardian with an excellent nose that can lock on and track a scent for miles. Can bite through just about anything and has a large golden ball it likes to play/fight with. Will often get distracted from his task for desires to play with his summoner.
Snake
Quote:
A stellar spirit mage that is capable of turning into any type of snake, often used for assassinations which makes it one of the most commonly purchased jade keys only out done by the rat.
~Okay...wait...what..did he actually say that this key turns the mage into any type of snake to kill people? What the hell are we even reading the same manga?~
Bai SuZhen (Lady White Snake) A beautiful pale white woman with scales in patches over her skin. She specializes in poisonous attacks that can be acidic depending on the strength. She can poison people but she can also heal people who have been poisoned usually by sucking at the wound where the poison has been injected then makes an anti-venom.
Well that's all of them with just the rat and pig to go.
My completed list.

Jade Keys
The Rat
"Nezumi Kozō (The rat-boy), A male figure dressed in dark cloths with a scarf tied over his face with rat-like features, Nezumi is able to change his size from towering to the size of a real rat. Great in stealth he makes for a good spy but he excels most as a thief. There's nothing he wouldn't try to go after, for him if there's a will then there's a way.
The Rabbit
"Yuètù (Moon Rabbit)", A small quick and agile rabbit-girl who fights with a kine(mallet) and has a mortar strapped onto her back. She can make mochi with life water that can help heal/restore the health of the consumer but she can not cure.
The Monkey
"Sun Wukong (Monkey King)", a great martial arts fighter who wields a red staff that can change length and size. He's fast, agile, and very flexable, can climb great heights with ease. Arrogant and a bit hard to control if you don't know how to appease his ego. If not he'll spend a majority of his time arguing with the summoner, contract be damned.
The Rooster
"Fenghuang (August Rooster)", A beautiful tan woman (Despite the rooster name) dressed in orange and yellow colors with many feathers in her back swept cockscomb styled hair. Fights with her feathered fan which sends strong blasts of solar flares. A friendly rival of sorts with the Snake. She is the female equivalence to the dragon and also the bringer of good fortune and luck when she is called.
The Horse
"Ma Miàn (Horse-Face)", A large strong looking person (believed to be male) who looks like he's creepily dressed for trick or treating or something akin to it, wearing a horse-head mask and armor wielding a tiger fork. He is physically one of the strongest and creepiest of the Jade spirits since he never speaks though communicate wells with body language. Best friends/brother/or lover to Ox.
The Sheep
"Shānyáng (Goat/mountain sheep)" A small teen or boy, looks like a runt with black wool, hoofed feet, and horns, wears a bell around his neck. Timid, cute, and very friendly. Despite his small size he does his all to please and is surprisingly a decent fighter (His looks allows for him to be underestimated). Has a very strong head butt attack. A cousin of sorts to Aries, his powers are similar to hers except he clumsily attracts static electricity resulting in the soft attacks being rather uncomfortable and perhaps an annoyance (sometimes the electricity will strike the summoner).
The Ox
"Niú Tóu (Ox-head)"- A large looking person (believed to be female) who looks like she’s going trick or treating or something akin to it, wearing an Ox-head mask and armor wielding a giant hammer (not the tool but the weapon). Best friends/sister/or lover to Horse. Like Horse she is equally creepy and silent though she seems to express herself more with her body language than Horse.
***Special note*** When the mage is strong enough (at least a B-rank though even then it's a struggle) and has both Horse and Ox keys they can summon them together for their special ability to call upon and open The Doors of Judgment. A great attack that can suck their enemy into the Underworld.
The Tiger
"Bái Hǔ (The white tiger)"- The king of the beast Bái Hǔ an anthro tiger whose fur has began to turn white from his tail up to his stomach. Powerful and strong he is a graceful and patient martial artist. His claws are sharp and he fights using sonic vibration transferred through the air waves and direct touch able to make even his roar a powerful attack. As the king of beasts he is able to communicate and command most animals though even for him some are rather stubborn.
The Dragon
"Lóng Wáng (Dragon king)", A beautiful man who floats a few feet off the ground, he stands with his shirt off revealing a coiling tattoo of his true form that reaches from his stomach to his chest and back and maybe even further down if he wasn't wearing pants. His means of attack are water based given that he controls water from the tiniest drop of rain to roaring seas. He is kind and benevolent but when severely angered he can flood a city without trouble. He is strong and usually careless mages loses their rights to his key within a day since they carelessly use him resulting in floods and their arrest thus ending the contract.
The Boar
"Zhu Wuneng", A man that looks like a pig, or a pig that has mannish looks no one is sure but his is a respectful and calm creature or rather very lazy and somewhat gluttonous. He has a weakness towards women and will do just about anything for them. Carries and iron rake which he uses to channel seismic waves through the ground causes minor quakes, earth splitting, and shifts.
The Dog
"Fu (Foo Dog)", A large steel foo dog/lion he's a great guardian with an excellent nose that can lock on and track a scent for miles. Can bite through just about anything and has a large golden ball it likes to play/fight with. Will often get distracted from his task for desires to play with his summoner.
The Snake
"Bai SuZhen (Lady White Snake)" A beautiful pale white woman with scales in patches over her skin. She specializes in poisonous attacks that can be acidic and corrosive depending on the strength. She can poison people but she can also heal people who have been poisoned usually by sucking at the wound where the poison has been injected or consuming the poison in some form then make an anti-venom. It takes her longer to create anti-venom for synthetic poisons.
