For the past month I've seen seeing ads on the television and a few signs in yards about Amendment One. The first one I ever saw told me "Amendment One hurts children!". The ads also told me about how it harmed children without really explaining it and also told me how it would harm others. Still without really explaining why.
There was only one ad for the Amendment One. It was a simple thing with a flag and a Bible in the foreground telling me how the Bible states that marriage was something defined as something between a man and a woman. Protect the sanctity of marriage. That was it.
In all honesty the Bible one lost me and if anything it made me upset. In my mind you can't really use the Bible to defend your point because if you chose to point out one thing in the Bible and how people are going against it then you'll have to acknowledge all of the rest. No one should be working on Sundays, after their period women should go through a purification rite, we should not be eating certain foods, the incest, and so on and so forth. And really same sex marriage and couples living together who aren't married and so on isn't the biggest threat to the sanctity of marriage. Think of all of the people who cheat.
Finally tired of griping about how poor that last ad was I finally looked up what Amendment One was about and then I wondered why in the hell are we even going through this.
“Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.”
That's it. The Amendment really does nothing I looked up reasons why it should be voted for and found it improved nothing but define what marriage means in the constitution. And with this more people will suffer.
It will have a backlash making it hard on unmarried couples to put one another on their insurance, the same for the children. If something was to happen to the parent of a child in an unwed couple relationship the child could be taken from the well parent. It seems like these examples are extreme but with a bureaucratic system to deal with it's very possible.
Really I can't explain all of the reasons and examples why Amendment One shouldn't be passed, and I'm starting to realize now why those commercials could never really tell me all I needed to know either because it's so much that's going on. All I can say is to see for yourself and if you live elsewhere where something like this could happen be prepared and well educated on the matter. What I do know is that if it is passed it can cost the state some money (too much to explain why it will but it will with taxes).
But what really surprised me was how unethical the major voices for Amendment One or to them the Marriage Protection Act are. The supporters just quote the Bible, but doesn't tell us what it means towards the unwed couples, the common law couples, and so on.
What's more so many people are against it, many churches, and even some conservatives are saying how unethical this is. The support against this is so big and so strong I can only hope that when it comes time to vote those who do oppose it get off their asses and goes to vote against it. I know I will.
