Double Take

Before chaos, there was quiet.

Not the kind of quiet you’d expect, either. No, this quiet was full of tension and the knowledge that something was going to happen. Yet it was quiet enough to be able to read a book, which is exactly what the Hume Ransem was doing in the commons of the Clan Gully clan-house.

Then there was the BOOM! from the kitchens.

Then came the maniacal laughter of the…newest…member of Clan Gully rushing out of the kitchen.

Then came shouting and yelling of the two nu mous that were working on their experiments in the kitchen. Ransem has never heard nu mous yell so loudly.

Then the chaos came into the commons room as the newest member, Gizy, ran away from the nu mous as they chased him.

Ransem sighed and closed his book. There went his three minutes of quiet. He watched as the nu mous and their prey ran around the commons and couldn’t help but miss Koteni.

Obnoxious, loudmouthed Koteni. The viera child that caused everyone so much trouble because she never listened. She got anything she wanted because she was pretty and knew how to use her prettiness. Other than that, she was worthless with weaponry and could never get a single magick spell right. Nonetheless, she was a child and Cid and Luso just didn’t have the heart to kick her out of the clan.

Then came the perfect opportunity.

A new clan, the Turks of Death, had sprouted up and gained popularity quite quickly to the point where Luso was literally struggling to keep his clan on top. The Turks of Death, not wanting to be the next Khamja, as everyone was calling them, decided to strike a deal with Clan Gully and…trade a few clan members around. Clan Gully, of course, readily agreed, but wished to start with just one to see how everything was. And thus, Koteni was gone and Gizy was in her place.

Sure, the guy was powerful and astoundingly skilled, but he was such a pain. He got along with no one, took no orders, never listened to the Judge, and hogged all of the kills. This led the veteran clanners to spend more time than they liked on the training grounds, which, by the way, Gizy tended to decimate quite often.

And now, he has done the unspeakable: he ruined a nu mou’s experiment. The last fool who did that was a seeq who is now spending the rest of his life cleaning up after Malboros. Sad thing is, Gizy wasn’t going to be punished the same way. As a matter of fact, he most probably was not going to be punished at all. No, the Turks of Death would most probably laugh at this and encourage him to do worse.

Ransem wondered if this was all part of their plan. He also wondered why Luso hasn’t kicked the guy out yet. And, as he watch Luso try and fail to calm down the pair of nu mous, he wondered what he was going to have for dinner.

It was a wonderful dinner indeed. The tavern was full, as usual, as most of Clan Gully tended to eat outside and Hurdy was on stage as well. Yet, there was no tension in the pub, as everyone was carefree and unwinding at the end of a rather difficult day. Most talk was about the upcoming Prima Donna concert, and multiple devotees were singing some of their songs. It made Ransem wished he’d brought his book with him to read.

After dinner, Ransem headed directly to his room only to find, to his extreme displeasure, that someone was occupying the room. The Enigma named Gizy was lying on his bed, flipping through his book. No one was allowed to do that, not even pretty-princess Adelle. Ransem stomped up towards Gizy and snatched his book away, inquiring indignantly, “What do you think you’re doing?!”

Gizy wasn’t fazed by this show of hostility, “You read such boring books. I spruced it up for you.”

Ransem didn’t understand what he meant and inquired again, “What are you doing in here?! This is MY room and NO ONE is allowed here!”

Gizy didn’t acknowledge the outburst and lay down on the bed, “You’re never on the training grounds. Why?”

“If you haven’t noticed, I’m not a people person.” Ransem started through gritted teeth, “I train at different times than they do.”

“And…you read books.” Gizy replied in a bored tone.

“So?” He asked, forcing himself to calm down.

“So, I noticed that you did something really strange when we first met.”
Ransem arched an eyebrow; so he was here to talk? “Oh?”

“Yup. You did a double take. The only other person who did that was an idiot bangaa who’s dead now.”

Ransem wasn’t impressed, “Are you threatening me? I’ll have you know I can more than take you on.”

Gizy laughed, “No, no you can’t. As a matter of fact this whole clan can get team up against me and I’ll still win.”

“Without a wonder. There is a reason why the maximum number of units on the field is six. Anymore and it will decrease effectiveness and efficiency, thus hurting the team more than helping it.”

Gizy gave Ransem a look that clearly said ‘nerd,’ and Ransem gave one back telling him ‘idiot.’ “Anything else you wanted?” Ransem inquired icily.

“Yeah,” Gizy replied, “Who keeps the law card?”

“Who keeps…are you serious?!” Ransem raged. The law card was crucial to any adjudged clan—it was their only way to summon the clan Judge. Why would he want to know about it? “I wouldn’t tell you if I knew!”

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.” Gizy replied pensively, “Although, I think they truly don’t have a clue. But you…” Gizy sat up and looked Ransem straight in the eyes, “You know, don’t you?”

It was true. Ransem knew that the law card was with either Luso or Cid at all times, and he often dealt with it too when he led missions (much to his displeasure), but there was no way he was going to tell this stranger, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Gizy smiled demonically, standing up and towering over Ransem. The Hume, although nervous, kept a straight face, “You come any closer and I’ll tell the Judge exactly what you are.”

Gizy stopped his evilness right in its tracks, “What?”

“You think I didn’t notice?” Ransem pointed in Gizy’s general direction, “All those…instruments on you. The ones that allow you to master multiple classes from multiple races. They’re illegal without proper clearance.”

When Gizy didn’t reply, Ransem knew he won that round. After all, it would be devastating to the Turks of Death if it got out that one of their members was doing something illegal. It would deter people away from them, and they would Gil, land, and fame. Not to mention that said member—or members—would go to jail. “How?” Gizy asked.

“Did you think that I do double takes for nothing?”

Gizy snorted, “You’re paranoid.”

“True,” Ransem confirmed, “But paranoia tends to pay off quite often in this clan. I instantly saw what was up your sleeves—literally and figuratively.”

Gizy looked alarmed, “What else do you know?!”

Ransem smiled evilly, “I’ll let that bug the sleep out of you.” Ransem then pointed to the door, “Now get out!”

Gizy almost obediently went to the door, but before opening it, he turned around, “If I get arrested, I’ll know whom to kill.”

“I won’t use it unless you force my hand.” Ransem retorted. Gizy then left the room, muttering something underneath his breath about numbers.

Ransem sighed and sat on the edge of his bed, hugging his book as he tried to calm himself down. That almost went down a dangerous tangent, and he could have been easily killed. Deciding that reading his book would be the best way to calm down, Ransem kicked off his shoes and got himself comfortable on the bed. He opened the book to the middle of it only to turn a deep shade of red and shut it as quickly as he could. He shook his head several times to clear his head of the…the images that he saw while trying to figure out what had happened to his book. He vaguely remembered Gizy mentioning something about sprucing up the book? Something like that. He hastily ripped the book jacket off only to turn ever redder and toss the book to the other side of the room.

Ransem couldn’t believe himself—of all the things not to pay attention to, it had to be his precious book!

…And he’d borrowed the book from the nu mous.

He was in trouble.

He was going to get Gizy in trouble.

While telling the Judge on him would be too much, nothing dictated that he couldn’t get some other form of revenge. And he was full on crazy-yet-evil ideas that he could easily walk away from untainted. That’d teach Gizy.

That’d teach him that messing with Ransem and his books means war.
