Bella Swan
Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone I loved. Noble, even. That ought to count for something.
When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it's not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end.
Stupid, shiny Volvo owner.
About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him--and I didn't know how potent that part might be--that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
But Edward was at my side at once. He caught me up in his iron grip, crushing me to him. He seemed unaware of his watching family as he pulled my face to his, lifting my feet off the floor. For the shortest second, his lips were icy and hard against mine. Then it was over. He set me down, still holding my face, his glorious eyes burning into mine.
His eyes went blank, curiously dead, as he turned away.
And they were gone.
We stood there, the others looking away from me as the tears streaked noiselessly down my face.
I love you. I am so sorry. He has my mom, and I have to try. I know it may not work. I am so very, very sorry.
Don't be angry with Alice and Jasper. If I get away from them it will be a miracle. Tell them thank you for me. Alice especially, please.
And please, please don't come after him. That's what he wants, I think. I can't bear it if anyone has to be hurt because of me, especially you. Please, this is the only thing I can ask you now. For me.
I love you. Forgive me.
Bella.
I folded the letter carefully, and sealed it in the envelope. Eventually he would find it. I only hoped he would understand, and listen to me just this once.
And then I carefully sealed away my heart.
Edward Cullen
"What if I'm not a superhero? What if I'm the bad guy?"
Edward Cullen and Bella Swan
"I dazzle people?"
"You haven't noticed? Do you think everybody gets their way so easily?"
"Do I dazzle you?"
"Frequently."
"Did you ever think that maybe my number was up the first time, with the van, and that you've been interfering with fate?"
"That wasn't the first time. Your number was up the first time I met you."
"My mind doesn't work right? I'm a freak?"
"I hear voices in my head and you're worried that you're the freak. Don't worry, it's just a theory.... Which bring us back to you."
"I decided it didn't matter."
"It didn't matter?"
"No. It doesn't matter to me what you are."
"You don't care if I'm a monster? If I'm not human?"
"No."
"So I'm wrong again?"
"That's not what I was referring to. 'It doesn't matter'!"
"I'm right?"
"Does it matter?"
"Not really. But I am curious."
"What are you curious about?"
"How old are you?"
"Seventeen."
"And how long have you been seventeen?"
"A while."
"Why didn't you want to leave?"
"It makes me...anxious...to be away from you. I wasn't joking when I asked you to try not to fall in the ocean or get run over last Thursday. was distracted all weekend, worrying about you. And after what happened tonight, I'm surprised that you did make it through a whole weekend unscathed. Well, not totally unscathed."
"What?"
"Your hands."
"I fell."
"That's what I thought. I suppose, being you, it could have been much worse--and that possibility tormented me the entire time I was away. It was a very long three days. I really got on Emmett's nerves."
"It's twilight. It's the safest time of day for us. The easiest time. But also the saddest, in a way...the end of another day, the return of the night. Darkness is so predictable, don't you think?"
"I like the night. Without the dark, we'd never see the stars. Not that you see them here much."
"So what you're saying is, I'm your brand of heroin?"
"Yes, you are exactly my brand of heroin."
"Isabella. Bella, I couldn't live with myself if I ever hurt you. You don't know how it's tortured me. The thought of you, still, white, cold...to never see you blush scarlet again, to never see that flash of intuition in your eyes when you see through my pretenses...it would be unendurable. You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever."
"You already know how I feel, of course. I'm here...which, roughly translated, means I would rather die than stay away from you. I'm an idiot."
"You are an idiot. And so the lion fell in love with the lamb..."
"What a stupid lamb."
"What a sick, masochistic lion."
"Are you still faint from the run? Or was it my kissing expertise?"
"I can't be sure, I'm still woozy. I think it's some of both, though."
"Bella, I've already expended a great deal of personal effort at this point to keep you alive. I'm not about to let you behind the wheel of a vehicle when you can't even walk straight. Besides, friends don't let friends drive drunk."
"Drunk?"
"You're intoxicated by my very presence."
"Just because I'm resisting the wine doesn't mean I can't appreciate the bouquet. You have a very floral smell, like lavender...or freesia. It's mouthwatering."
"Yeah, it's an off day when I don't get somebody telling me how edible I smell."
"You were very deeply asleep; I didn't miss anything. The talking came earlier."
"What did you hear?"
"You said you loved me."
"You knew that already."
"It was nice to hear, just the same."
"I love you."
"You are my life now."
"I love you. I will always love you, no matter what happens now."
"Nothing is going to happen to you, Bella."
"Just follow the plan, okay? Keep Charlie safe for me. He's not going to like me very much after this, and I want to have the chance to apologize later."
"Get inside, Bella. We have to hurry."
"One more thing. Don't listen to another word I say tonight!"
"I miss you."
"I know, Bella. Believe me, I know. It's like you've taken half my self away with you."
"Come and get it, then."
"Soon, as soon as I possibly can. I will make you safe first."
"I love you."
"Could you believe that, despite everything I've put you through, I love you, too?"
"Yes, I can, actually."
"I'll come for you soon."
"I'll be waiting."
"Alice already saw it, didn't she? That's why the things she says upset you. She knows I'm going to be like you...someday."
"She's wrong. She also saw you dead, but that didn't happen, either."
"You'll never catch me betting against Alice."
"Stay."
"I will. Like I said, as long as it makes you happy...as long as it's what's best for you."
"'S not the same thing."
"Don't worry about that now, Bella. You can argue with me when you wake up."
"'Kay."
"I love you."
"Me, too."
"I know."
"Thanks."
"Anytime."
"Edward?"
"Yes?"
"I'm betting on Alice."
"Twilight, again. Another ending. No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end."
"Some things don't have to end."
"So ready for this to be the end, for this to be the twilight of your life, though your life has barely started. You're ready to give up everything."
"It's not the end, it's the beginning."
"Is that what you dream about? Being a monster?"
"Not exactly. Mostly I dream about being with you forever."
"Bella. I will stay with you--isn't that enough?"
"Enough for now. Look. I love you more than everything else in the world combined. Isn't that enough?"
"Yes, it is enough. Enough for forever."
Mike Newton and Bella Swan
"You and Cullen, huh?"
"That's none of your business, Mike."
"I don't like it."
"You don't have to."
"He looks at you like...like you're something to eat."
Edward and Alice Cullen
"It sounded like you were having Bella for lunch, and we came to see if you would share."
"Sorry, I don't believe I have enough to spare."
