Gah, board, board, board...
Three Laws of Magic:
"Those that desire, never be forced."
"Light chases away shadows, but once swallowed, never returns."
"Civilization creates a zero-sum game."
-----
The first, "Those that desire, never be forced," applies to what happens when one is given, forcibly, what they desire. The cold man will go into shock if rapidly warmed, the falling are damaged if suddenly stopped, the thirsty drown, and the breathless choke. Therefore, the Elemental Mage will learn restraint and cation in using there magic for helpful purposes.
---
The second, "Light chases away the shadows, but once swallowed, never returns," refers to life, my friend. Light [match is struck, igniting almost instantly] is akin to life. It chases away the dark, it chases away Death. However, like the match [flicks wrist, making the flame disappear], once the flame of Life is gone, it cannot be returned. Therefore, my young Sorcerer of the Dark, never attempt to return Life to the Dead.
---
The third law? "Civilization creates a zero-sum game." For everything you make, every rune crafted, something must be sacrificed. For everything you destroy, every rune dispelled, something will be gained. Civilization grows, but only in available resources and imagination. No matter what, a Rune Lord and his Knights play a zero-sum game.
