You told me it was all my fault
Said I had no right to cry
Sometimes I just couldn’t help myself
You often threatened to end my life
Sometimes, I wished you would
I would egg you on
Try to drive you to actually do it
Sometimes it seemed my only escape
You told me I was the smartest girl you knew
Later you said I was the dumbest
You would say I was so pretty
Then say I was so fat
I never knew what to believe
Whenever somebody was around
You were so friendly, so nice
But I knew, as soon as they left
That whole act would end
Because of you,
I can’t believe anyone who says they love me
Because of you
I can’t believe anyone who says I matter
If I couldn’t believe it from my own mother
How can I believe it from anyone else?
