Moonlight laps upon the silver shore,
The long silent stretch that never bore
The beating heart of the human soul
Or the burning of a bright red coal.
The brewing storm dare not approach.
The song bird’s too frightened to encroach
Upon the pressing silent chill.
The wind blows not, the leaves hang still.
For in the beauty and the light
An evil lurks just out of sight.
It crawls along, its thick hide heaves,
Its muscles pull, its long tail weaves.
It never leaves the silver shore
Except to hunt the wild boar
That lives in the thickly wooded steep
That forms the monster's silent keep
Smoke swirls around above its head
Its eyes glow an angry iridescent red
It turns it snout to the deep velvet skies
Looking for life’s telltale signs.
Fangs, like daggers, flash in the night
In a grin that fills the soul with fright
For in the distance across the lake
The black bushes begin to shake
Out of the trees there comes a knight,
Upon a horse that shines in the light.
They move as one with balance and grace
Unaware of the monster about to give chase.
With a spark and a flash he leaps from his stead
Breaking the silver shore’s silent creed.
For he’s called back the monster’s wild strife,
A battle against all of blood and life.
It slides forward now, it knows what to do.
It enters the water without leaving a clue.
The knight awaits as his horse drinks its fill
Oblivious to the beast’s deadly will.
It bursts from the water with a spray of light,
A thousand moons reflected in the night,
The horse rears back, then bolts for cover
Whether it made it was never discovered
The knight takes his stance then draws his blade.
It glints while he stands in the silent shade
Cast by the looming serpentine creature
That blocks out the moon’s elegant features.
It lunges down, its mouth open wide
He feints over one way then leaps to the side
As the beast hits the ground it lets out a cry
Then snaps around only to find empty sky
The knights too quick, he jabs this way and that,
His blade flicking out to n** its scaled back
The beast roars with agony and despair,
For its speed and its strength cannot compare.
The knight relaxes, he thinks it’s over
But the beast lunges out striking his shoulder
The blade falls to the ground, he stumbles back
The beast recoils and prepares another attack.
A hand on his shoulder to staunch the flow
It’s not strong, but fatigue is starting to show.
He runs to the side to keep the beast turning
and earn more time for his shoulder to stop burning.
The beast sits down to watch the knight move
Around the wide circle to the blade’s deep grove.
He reaches his blade, lifts it, then stands readily
But beast merely sits to watch the knight steadily.
A hundred fangs flash in the light of the moon
For the beast knows it will be over soon.
For as the knight stands and sways
A deadly venom is coursing through his veins
The blade once held high, now tips to the ground
And his thought and this place are no longer bound
As blackness fills his sight once more
He falls to his knees upon the silver shore.
With the last of his strength he cast his blade
At the creature that by the silver shore was made
To protect the silent stretches and wooded steeps
And wander alone this silent keep.
The blade streaks past the monstrous creature
And burrows into a tree’s course features
And as the beast slides into the lake
It leaves only silence in its wake.
