• Silence reigns
    over a once-cheery plain
    except for a little bird
    who persists in keeping
    himself here in spite of
    an emptiness which spans
below him like a deep chasm.

He is aware of the silence,
    and dreading it, sets forth
    his song to an uneasy
    audience in a last pleading
wish for his home to be restored.

But times do not come easy
    in a desolated land. . . . . . . . . . . .as far as one can see
    in a lifetime, and for
    the lonely bird such changes
can take such a long time indeed.
