• I am a lost soul
    Walking without a purpose
    Life in itself
    Needs nothing from me.

    Then I see a butterfly
    With wings crimson and gold
I follow it to a familiar tree
    Of sweet cherry blossoms.

And I hear a voice say,
    "If you were never here,
This tree would have withered away
    Never to see
    The sunlight of spring."

    If flutters away
    to a little school house
    where I was taught
    when I was young

And the Butterfly says to me,
    "What a strange thing,
How one person can save another
    just by being a friend."

    The Butterfly flies away
And I feel I must follow it
    Into the evening sunset
    Then into the breaking dawn

I shutter when I see where this butterfly took me
    When I see
    Its a cemetery
    A familiar place
    A familiar face
I come to closer to see
    And I come to see
    That the face I see
    Is me.

    I see myself
    At the grave
    Of my long lost lover
    Who died a death
At the hand of a driver
    Who was intoxicated
    With the sinning substance.

I am crying at his grave
Pleading for God to give him rebirth
    And place him again
    Upon this Earth

    Then I hear the Butterfly
say to me in such a voice
    That is so familiar say,
    "Don't cry my dear.
I want you to live on.
As long as you live on,
    I will be forever alive
    In your sweetest memories."

    And at the moment
    I realize
    that the Butterfly was you
    My long lost lover.

And then I see the Butterfly
Fly higher and higher into the sky
Seeing it fly away, I started to cry,
    But remembered you,
    And just asked why
    why why why
    why did you die,
    and not I?
