On the last day of her life, from which she was torn
the last song she heard was the sound of my horn
It was the week after Christmas, and I had to play
I remember as though it was just yesterday
The music is still alive in my head
and it will be until I too am dead
And now I sit up in my room
and wonder why she went so soon
She was sent to the hospital that fateful day
she had pneumonia, or that's what they say
She was coughing up blood, that's all that I know
And she never came home, once she had to go
She went into a coma that very afternoon
and they moved her into the ICU
She never came out, and now I'm in my room
wondering why she went so soon
Soon afterwards, she had a life support tube
we asked what was wrong, but nobody knew
by January 29, at around 3
my redheaded friend had ceased to be
she would never again play her clarinet
and on football games we would never again bet
And as for her other friends, they're up in their rooms
wondering why she went so soon
I remember her face, her eyes, her hair
and I cherish all the memories we share
I remember her voice, her laugh, her smile
and as I think back, it was worth all the while
A friend she was, and a friend she'll stay
I think about her every day
as I sit up in my room
and wonder why she went so soon
