• Your face flashed across my mind
As I dipped my brush back into the paint,
Mixing colors to make the perfect blue
    Of the sky that day.
I hadn’t thought of you in a while,
    But the lake reminded me
Of all those times we had together
    Back when we were younger.

The breeze swayed the grass below
As I gazed upon the beauty that was the sunrise,
That which I merely had to
step onto my back porch to see.

I looked out at the deck by the lake
    Where your old boat sat,
Rocking patiently with the gentle current
    Of the water.
It seemed to beckon to me,
Asking me to dig up old memories
    And think of you again.
    The boat was reminiscent of
All the good times we had together.
Those days brought me to life,
    Gave my spirit wings,
And seemed to set me free to live my life.

    I smiled and felt refreshed,
Every fiber of me feeling younger
With the very speculation of your presence again.
My brush seemed to glide across the canvas
    As I lightened the painting,
    Gave it a new meaning.
    The beauty of life’s simplicity.

    I finished my painting,
    But I wasn’t satisfied.
Nature’s reminder of you hung in my thoughts
Like the urge to burst outside on a beautiful day.
    Before I knew it,
I was running to the car,
Ready to see you once again.
I left my paint, my home, my life,
    To beg for your forgiveness
And start anew in the life I left behind
    All those years ago.
My brush lay cold on the porch,
    My painting on it’s stand,
And my note on his pillow.
    A new life, I thought,
    My new life with you.
