• Douglas Adams once wrote that "Human Beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."

It is not that we are not inclined to learn from the experience of others, but more that we are stubborn and afraid of becoming those others. We all want to believe that we make our own way in the world, that we are the masters of our destiny. We all want to believe that we are unique non-conformists and that our lives are our own. However, we are not the masters of our destinies because ultimately our lives and the people that we become are shaped and influenced by the experiences of the people we choose to surround ourselves with. We are all connected to each other through our experiences, our triumphs, our fears and our failures....we are humanity.

Sometimes I think that if we could just give up that stubborn and prideful part of ourselves and admit when we are wrong and take the time to really learn from the experiences of ourselves and others, then we could change the course of the world. If we could stop being afraid of becoming the others, we could be more as human beings than what we have become. I believe that maybe we could regain the humanity we have lost and put an end to the history that everyday keeps repeating itself.
