  • Artist Info: Operation "Hump" was a search and destroy in war zone "D" of Vietnam, initiated by the 103rd Airborne Brigade on November 5th, 1965. 0600 hours the 8th, C company went northwest to hill 65, while B company went to hill 78. 2 hours later Company was faced with a large V.C. force. On November 8, 1965, at 0930 hours, after B company was given an order at 0845 to wheel around and relieve C company, B company joined C company on hill 65 against a large V.C. force. B company was forcing the enemy's right flank while C company was under heavy fire. The enemy's right flank moved northwest to escape B company's attack. The B comp. commander called an air and artillery fire on the Viet Congs. B company then met with C company to form a defense line from the northwest to the southeast of the hill, with little southern cover. The People's Liberation Armed Forces (PLAF[Viet Cong]) tried to close with the U.S. troops so the fire would be insufficient. Shoulder to shoulder attacks and fist fights occurred. Some isolation of B and C companies happened, but the Americans survived two assaults like that. The fighting continued, but soon the PLAF troops retreated. The Americans made a protective circle around the dead and wounded, getting them airlifted out of war zone "D", the last being pulled out the morning of November 9th. The Americans were victorious, but at heavy loss.<br />

    Operation Hump, November 5-9, 1965 ended with heavy losses on both sides. 48 brave U.S. brave paratroopers lost their lives, while much more were wounded. 403 PLAF soldiers died out of about 1200. Lawrence Joel, a medic, was the first living black man to be given the U.S. medal of honor since the Spanish American war. he was injured but still saving many lives throughout the battle.<br />
