Deadly Duo Chapter 3
Katherine happily ate the food while staring at the teachers table. She was never one to keep track of time, especially when her mind was…occupied. Katherine cleared her plate and reached for some more of the delicious turkey. She was so focused on the blonde teacher that she hadn’t noticed that the food had disappeared, which caused her to lose her balance as she leaned too far forward. She went face first into the table, but shot back up and glanced at the teachers table, rubbing her nose. Good, he didn’t see that. Katherine heard snickers and giggles from some of the other first year snots. The snickering stopped just as quickly as Katherine shot them her ‘death stare’. Her eyes raked across the table daring anyone else to laugh at her. She paused as she noticed the girl sitting next to her staring in the same direction she had been before hitting the table. Katherine followed her gaze and noticed she was looking more at the slate-haired male than the one she herself goggled at. Katherine nodded. At least we won’t have any fights. She continued to stare and drool and the blonde until the headmaster stood up.

“Before I dismiss you all, I would like to introduce our newest staff members.” Katherine sat up straighter as she saw his hand pointed at her eye candy and the one sitting next to him. “Our newest librarian, Professor Hiwatari.” The man with blue hair folded in the page in his book, closing it as he stood to be acknowledged. She heard the girl besides her say something under her breath. “And our new Alchemy professor, Professor Elric.” Elric eh? I like. Professor Elric stood up. He was a few inches shorter than she was from what she could tell. Katherine noticed a slight twitch in his temple as whispers sped around the hall. A mite touchy about his height I see. The headmaster nodded his head and the professors, all of them, stood up and exited. Katherine almost cried watching him leave.

Sighing, Katherine scanned the room, noticing that by being distracted by the professors leave, she and the girl her age were the only ones left in the Great Hall. “The left without us! Maybe if we hurry we can catch up!” They darted out of the door and into the hallway. They stared gape-jawed at the moving staircases. I have enough trouble with stationary stairs! The girl she was with had moved down the hall and was yelling back at her. “This way!” She pointed to a set of stairs going down. Katherine followed her, catching up with the other Slytherins in the main room of their dorm. Katherine, the girl, and the other first years stood there, staring at all around them. The older years, already knowing what to do, were heading up stairs, boys at one side, girls at the other.

The Common Room was large, with green accents everywhere. The stone walls looked like they were light green liquid from the lighting. Tables, chairs, and couches were all over the place. Katherine started down the stairs where the other girls had gone when she heard her name being called. “Kelsey! Katherine! Come over here please.” Aha. So Kelsey is her name. I’ll have to remember that. “As you can see, you are older than the other first years. Technically too old to be here at Hogwarts. So, Professor Dumbledore and our head of house Professor Snape agreed to let you two have your own room. As far as I know, if you two can get along, you can have that room for the rest of the years you attend.” Katherine followed their apparently designated guide into a room on the bottom floor. This was a big room as well. It held two four-poster beds, one on each side of the room. The green drapes seemed able to hide anything lying on the bed.

The one who showed them the room left, leaving the two to explore . Katherine swept across the room, along the beds, shelves, desks….She didn’t like the window, enchanted like the ceiling in the Great Hall. Katherine liked, no, loved, the dark. Maybe she could find the counter charm. Katherine took a scrunchii from her wrist and pulled her hair into a tight bun. Not being able to take the silence, and not quite ready to explore the large bathroom attached to their room, Katherine tried to make conversation. “So what bed do you want?” Kelsey looked at the bed nearest her and picked up the envelope that was sitting on the green velvet throw pillow. “This one seems to be mine.”

Katherine tilted her head and leaned against the wall as Kelsey looked at whatever papers were inside. “Really?” Kelsey nodded, not looking up from the papers. “Bleh…worst schedule ever.” Katherine’s eyes widened. If that envelope held her roommate’s schedule….She dashed to the other bed and tore open the dratted piece of paper that was a sorry excuse for an envelope. Her eyes raced across the paper, stopping at three words: Alchemy-Professor Elric. Katherine screeched, causing Kelsey to look at her. “What the hell?” Katherine flailed and waved the paper in the air. “I have alchemy with Professor Elric!” Kelsey plopped onto her bed. “So?” Katherine didn’t let Kelsey’s disinterest bring her down. She had alchemy with Professor Elric!

Katherine sighed and fell back onto the bed. These beds are huge. Gotta be King or Queen. There’s enough room for two. “You know, I’m glad I go out of my parent’s grasp. My dad nearly had a heart attack when he saw the envelope, at least the first one. He snatched it from my hands and shredded it. Thankfully I was the only one home when the last one came. My dad can get real religious on me. My mom is a whole other story. They both favored my sister though. The fact that I was able to slip away to buy my plane ticket surprises even me.” Katherine sighed again. She didn’t know why she wanted to talk, but she just kept going, hoping Kelsey wouldn’t hate her for it. “But I wasn’t able to get my supplies for the classes. I actually had to steal this robe from someone.” She chuckled. “Oh, and the name’s Katherine in case you didn’t know.” She folded her hands behind her head and relaxed. I’m here now, so I can care less about what is happening at home. Although from what I hear, we have to go back home for the summer. Oh well. It’s the beginning of the year. No need to worry about that now. But I do need to talk to someone about getting supplies. Wonder if Kelsey got anything. And what do I need for Alchemy? Katherine reached for her schedule again. Looks like tomorrow was have the day to get used to the grounds. I should go then. But for now...Katherine stood up and stretched. Now she would check out the bathroom.

In the center of the bathroom was a large tub, looking more like a swimming pool, complete with water already in it. Silver faucets lined an edge of the tub. Katherine decided to experiment. Once faucet dripped vanilla scented liquid. One filled the tub with bubbles…which started to overflow. Katherine scrambled to close the faucet before she drowned in them. “Close you stupid thing!” No dice. Katherine fled the room and slammed the door shut, causing Kelsey to glare at her. Katherine simply grinned. “I wouldn’t go in there if I were you.” Kelsey shrugged and went back to her book. A thought struck Katherine. How am I supposed to get my pajamas on with the bathroom full of bubbles?

Kelsey had thought that Katherine was odd before, but when Katherine moved away from the bathroom like it was some kind of bomb, she thought Katherine was down right insane. Kelsey hid her face in her book as her roommate tripped over something, biting back a laugh. She noticed that she was almost at the end of it. I wonder if the library would have something good for me to read. It would give me an excuse to see that god there.

“Hey Kelsey! Our stuff is here.” At Katherine’s comment, Kelsey rolled to the end of her bed and peeked inside the trunk. “Wonder how they knew who’s was who’s and what house we’d be in.”

As Katherine pulled out some clothes and went back into the bathroom, Kelsey pulled out her wand. She muttered a spell, changing her clothes for nighttime ones. She buried her nose back in her book as Katherine came back out.

Katherine stared at Kelsey confused. “How did you?” Kelsey waved her wand in the air. “Right…Where did you get it?” Kelsey didn’t look up. “Diagon Alley. I would suggest you go there. They have everything you’ll no doubt need.”

Katherine sent an awkward smile Kelsey’s way and went to her bed, closing the green curtains. Hopefully I can go tomorrow. Should ask Professor Snape…whoever he is. Or maybe I can ask another teacher to go with me. Not too sure about this whole magic thing. I’ll probably prefer alchemy. I actually understand science. Katherine pulled the blanket over her head. I’ll worry about that in the morning. I just want to sleep.

Kelsey too closed the curtains to her bed, setting the book on the bedside table, her glasses on top of them. Wonder why Katherine never got her stuff. She had talked about sneaking away. Perhaps her parents are as bad as my mum. Kelsey closed here eyes. Maybe tomorrow I’ll check out the library.
