With this statement, I have probably offended over half the American population. >.<
Before anyone gets all bitchy, it's not just because of Twilight vampires.
So you're probably wondering WHY I've decided that vampires aren't cool anymore. Let me explain.
First of all, they're always changing. In other words, in every vampire book/movie you see/read, the vampires have different powers and different weaknesses, each one contradicting another one. The only similarity between all vampires nowadays is, they drink blood. At one point, most vampires were all the same in everyones' eyes. You know, vampires were afraid of garlic and crosses and burned in the sun, and could turn into bats and slept in coffins, killed with a stake through the heart, etc etc. But since then, vampires have turned into symbols that authors and movie producers change at will. "Oh, too many movies have them turning into bats! let's make them levitate instead!" "It would be so cool if we broke the common belief and made them able to eat garlic!" "Vampires have always burned in the sun. Let's make them SPARKLE!" ...etc. etc. I dunno about you, but I personally would like to have a solid outline of exactly what a vampire can do, other than drink blood. Changing them around so much annoys me.
Secondly, because of their popularity and the way the media portrays them, it seems like people no longer fear and respect vampires, which is the whole point of their existence in the first place. >.< I mean, think about it. About a hundred years ago, if you were to tell someone you were a vampire, they'd run away screaming. That fear automatically gained respect for them. And it made them badass. Nowadays if you tell someone you're a vampire, they either wouldn't believe you, or they'd be like "OH EM GEE YOU'RE A VAMPIRE??!!111??!11ONE!!1ONE11!! LIEK TOTALLY BITE ME AND MARRY ME AND HAVE MY CHILDREN!!" ...Where's the badassness in that? Exactly. There is none.
The third thing is...Well, vampire movies and books have just gotten BORING lately. Maybe not the books and movies themselves, but the whole concept itself has been used way too many times. It's too COMMON. People didn't used to use the concept of vampires in anything much. So whenever there WAS a movie or book based on it, it was extra-special. Now they're a dime a dozen. Every other TV series, movie series, or book series is about vampires, and they're all just about the same.
Think about it like this: Imagine you invented something totally revolutionary. Something amazing that would change peoples' lives forever. At the time, people would spend hundreds, maybe THOUSANDS of dollars on it. But what would happen within 10 years? Other people would make their own versions of it, to cash in on the profit. It would get more and more common, and less and less valuable. In 10 years, your extra-amazing invention that once was worth thousands could now be found in a dumpster with a 90% off sales tag on it. See what I mean?
...I dunno. The more I hear about something, the less I like it. I guess you could call it over-popularization.
There are actually alot more reasons why vampires aren't cool anymore, in my opinion. But the rest are mostly opinion-based, and everyone else would "disprove" them with reasons why they're not correct. (those reasons usually being only from THEIR opinions rather than cold, hard fact.) So I'll end this here.
