Sunday 16th June
This morning one of the king’s guards barged into my kitchen while I was cooking breakfast. He grabbed a piece of bread and mumbled something. When I didn’t respond, he got angry and swore. Before he left, he repeated what he had said then he banged the door shut. The king wanted me to come and cook for a banquet he was holding that evening. When I told my friends at the market this morning, they said that it must be a great opportunity. I didn’t think so but I didn’t say so out loud. I have been to the king’s castle. The king isn’t nice. He is crude and can’t keep his hands to himself. My friends don’t know that. They haven’t been to his castle.
First I had to pay to get across the bridge. The bridge fee is expensive. I knew I would get paid for cooking, but not very much. When I got there, the castle was already filling up. I was escorted underground to the kitchens. Down there, I could hear distant cries from the prisoners that were dying from starvation with a banquet being prepared only a few feet away! If the guards were not there, I would walk across the room and feed them the best bits. The king doesn’t deserve it, they do.
When I was finished I was paid. They didn’t pay me much, only enough to get across the bridge. Tomorrow is the day the thief gets hung.
