So...what do I need to tell you....oh yeah. Roark. He's the first gym leader in Pkmn Diamond/Pearl. He's a rock-type user. His dad is, like, the 5th gymleader and he's a rock/steel type user. I like them both. Moonlit is a dork for Roark.
Oh and LOOK! I managed to stuff enough comedy and angst to make it into three genres. yay!!

anywho. enjoy!

A Rocky Relationship

Roark didn’t know when it started.

Maybe it was when he first saw the girl. With her eyes twinkling with superior confidence and with a look that said, “I’m gonna kick your butt.”

Or maybe it was when he saw her digging up rocks like mad man…er woman. Her eyes were twinkling with such determination and a look that said, “Almost there! I got this!”

Or…maybe it was because of her eyes. With their hazelnut color and exotic shape and the ability to show what she was thinking deep inside.

Or…maybe it was because she had a Geodude.

That was most probably it. Not many trainers nowadays had Geodudes on their teams. But she did.

…It was named Balboa…That was a weird name. But she had a Geodude. And that was cool.

He didn’t even know the trainer’s name, actually. But he remembered her beating him…marginally.

He remembered commenting on how she needs to train more if she wanted to beat the other Gym Leaders. He remembered her nodding bleakly in tired agreement. He remembered her saying that he shouldn’t worry because she was going to have more than just four Pokémon by the time she reached the next Gym Leader. She then left, and he didn’t see her for a long time; about three months, really.

Usually, after two or three days, he’d have forgotten about any trainers that had challenged him during that time. But not her. Even after three months, he could still remember her. And apparently, he kept on talking about her.

He remembered talking to his dad about her once…ok, thrice. That was all that he could remember. Apparently, he did so a lot more often, because when he started to talk to her about the third time (in which he was using her as an example in a philosophical argument against his father, and his father was losing), his father changed the topic into “Exactly why do you keep mentioning the girl that much?”

Roark reacted to that the way any normal person did—deny. His father had laughed at him then, and started to tease him about having a crush. Roark didn’t think he had a crush. I mean, come on, the girl had a Geodude! That deserved a mention a few times! But no, his father just laughed and teased him some more.

That got Roark thinking: why did he mention that girl too much? Sure, she had a Geodude, but a few trainers after her had Geodudes too. The more he thought about it, the more he was struck with the realization that he could still remember how she looked like. And after much thought, he came to the conclusion that he had a crush.

….Joyous. Needless to say, his dad got away with teasing him after that, but it didn’t stop Roark from blushing and being embarrassed.

He met her again after those three months though. He had gone down to the mines and was simply expecting the area when he saw her: she was digging away furiously at the wall with the hammer before she haphazardly dropped it and grabbed the pickaxe and started at the wall again. And just as the wall started collapsing, she dropped the pickaxe and grabbed the jewels out with her bare hands before jumping back as the rubble came crashing down. She had quickly stuffed the items in her bag, turned on the radar, and then took off with top speed down the hall. As she was doing so, Roark couldn’t help but notice that she had dirt patches on her pants and shirt and face, and her hands were completely covered with dirt. It wasn’t until she was gone that he noticed that he was holding his breath, and that she was an enthusiastic digger…she just needed to be more careful.

Knowing this information, Roark couldn’t help but come down to the mines and the underground more often, and upon his dad finding out, was encouraged to go talk to her. But Roark didn’t have any clue what to say or do, so he just watched her from afar.

It was one depressing day that luck finally showed him good face. His week had been terrible. All the trainers that came to challenge him won (he was used to losing, but not this bad). He had to deal with three tunnel collapses, fifteen cases of rouge Pokémon, and now a pulled muscle. Oh, and there was the fact that he hasn’t seen his now official crush in a week and a half. He had his duties to do, and thus was down in the tunnel that weekend doing his usual inspections when he heard a scream. Following the scream, he saw her.

She was the one who was screaming.

She wasn’t only screaming, she was screaming at the top of her lungs and running at top speed. She was missing her usual bag and tools, and was carrying her Geodude with her, who was very obviously KO’ed. And she was being chased by a group of Zubats.

Oh, yeah; time to be a hero!

Using his flashiest Pokémon moves, Roark dealt enough damage to the Zubats to have them hightail it away from the girl. When he turned around, though, the girl was still running. She kept doing so until she tripped, fell, and looked behind her in panic. When she saw him standing there with no Zubats in sight, she sighed and stayed where she was.

Roark calmly strolled over to her and helped her up, asking her if she was OK. She smiled and said yes, and started to walk back to her digging spot to get her stuff. Roark walked with her in order to protect her if any more Pokémon attack, and the two started a very natural and easy going conversation. Yet all the while, the only thought in Roark’s mind was, “She has pretty eyes.”

They became buddies after that. They talked often, they would dig together often, and they would share stories and jokes. Roark’s favorite time of the week was hanging out with her, and he learned a lot about her in that time.

He learned that after she was completely crushed by the second Gym Leader, she had given up on Pokémon training. She didn’t know what to do until she used her dig kit and found that she had a hobby for this. She kept her first same four Pokémon in case of need of defense. He also learned that she has a wicked since of humor, and really enjoyed a good joke. She told him a lot of jokes that she knew, and he found that he really liked good jokes too. And as most guys do, they try to impress. And Roark tried to impress. The actually did research and talked to a ton of rocks just to find some good jokes to tell. All his work bore fruit, for he had the girl laughing and laughing.

After about a month of this, his dad pointed something out (in his usual teasing/trying-to-escape-losing-an-argument-way): What’s her name?

When his father asked him that, he blanched. He really didn’t know what her name was. While he sat to think of this, his father simply laughed at him and teased him some more. Anyway, he found that there was only one solution to this: ask her for her name. The only problem is that how he was supposed to do that without looking really, really stupid and mean.

So he didn’t ask. He kept looking up jokes and being nice and even had a nice conversation with a rock (in which she participated in) around her. They dug treasure and stuff and had a lot of fun and the guilt was freaking starting to eat him up. It was in one of those lapses of silence that occurred while they were digging that he opened his mouth to ask her name, but she beat him to it.

“You know, I don’t have a clue what your name means.” She told him, frowning. “I mean, I know it has something to do with rocks, but it can’t be just that.”

“Actually, it is. There’s nothing special hiding behind my name.” He replied.

“No way!” She challenged, “Each name has something behind it! I mean, look at mine—” Roark hoped that she’d mention her name here “—My name comes off of rocks too, but my parents called me that because they wanted their child to be pure and innocent forever more. Your dad couldn’t have called you Roark just because.”

Great, she didn’t mention her name. “Uhm….My dad called me Roark because he likes rocks?” He tried.

She paused her work and looked at him, “Are you serious? There’s really no other reason?”

“None that I know of.”

“Oh…” She shrugged and went back to her work. “…Sorry, that just doesn’t make sense to me.”

The conversation was over by then, and they lapsed back into silence. Roark racked his brain—what kind of rock represented purity and innocence? Topaz..citrine…emerald? No, definitely not. Not emerald; not sapphire; not ruby…Diamond? Not pearl…

Oh, COME ON! Roark yelled at himself mentally. I know I have it, but what is it?

…He couldn’t figure it out. He just couldn’t. His mind kept drawing a blank He sighed and succumbed to his problem and turned around to ask her, but before he opened his mouth, she beats him to talking again.

“Hey Roark?”

“Uhm…yeah?” She knew. Oh, no, she knows.

“Still haven’t figured it out?”

“Eh?” He looked at her with a confused expression.

“My name. Haven’t you figured it out yet?”

At this, Roark panicked. Half of his mind raced with the names of different rocks while the other half was screaming, she knows she knows she knows she knows—

And then his mind found the answer.

“Crystal!!” He blurted out without thinking.

She smiled at him and nodded, “Yup. It’s spelled with a ‘K’ though.”

“Krystal…It’s a nice name. And how did you know that I didn’t know your name?” he inquired.

“Because I never told you! I never tell anyone.”

Roark arched his eyebrow. If he hadn’t been hanging around her for so long, he wouldn’t have figured out what she was talking about. “Mind game?”

“Yup! Almost everybody loses. You’re the first winner in a really long time.”

“So I get a prize?” He said teasingly. He didn’t expect her to reply positively though.

“Yup! And your prize is…” She stopped what she was doing and went up to him and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. “…that.” She then went back to her spot and began digging again, trying her best to hide the dark red blush that was staining her cheeks.

But Roark didn’t notice that. Not at all. He was too busy blushing to notice. He just knew he was going to act like an airhead all day. And he just knew his father was going to tease him senseless about it. And he just knew he was going to ask her out before the end of the day.

…And he just knew that he was now officially an idiot in love.
