Rantings of a Diseased Mind
All those who read further beware, for your brain shall liquify, drip out your nostrils, and flush itself down the toilet.
Beware of spoilers and suspicious meat pies...
Well, I just saw Tim Burton's interpretation of what is quite possibly the greatest musical to grace Broadway- Sweeney Todd. As much as I loved Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter, after the movie was over I soon found myself enjoying the special features far more than the film itself. Unlike the original production, there was no balance to this movie. Everything was dark about it, all the humor and most of the romance had been cut from the script. It was a whole different animal from the play. There were also a few script changes and details I'm not fond of.
-Sweeney didn't run into Lucy until the end of the movie. One of the saddest things to me in the play is that he never recognised the woman he'd come home for, even before he gets distracted with revenge.
-Johanna didn't kill Mr. Fogg, the eloping couple wasn't caught by the police, and Toby was not caught after killing Sweeney. I liked how thoroughly corrupted every character had become by the end of the play, and how no one got a happily ever after, but it didn't happen in the movie. They shouldn't have even left open the chance that those characters got to live the rest of their lives anywhere but in prison.
-Sasha Baron Cohen killed Pirelli. 'Nuf said.
On the other hand, it was pretty. So pretty, in fact, it won an Oscar just for being pretty. And it had Alan Rickman. He's pretty too.
