What did I do this time?
Balst in the Past part two, Party Cut Short
Jez finally found the closet, and what a lovely closet it was, after what seemed like forever. She was awe struck by the splendor, and immensity that met her when she walked in. Clothes from every age, all over the universe greeted her. She was so awestruck that she took a drink right out of the bottle of Riesling she found in the cellar. She planned to save it with the other wine she stowed away but, what the hay? It was a cellar full of wine! Jez went right to work trying to find the perfect outfit for the time period the Doctor had taken her to. And there it was a beautiful light blue gown that screamed ‘envy of the party’. The dress had a corset fitted top lined in lace at the neck and bows at the base. The arms where mid length and buttoned at the ends. The skirt of the dress wasn’t too wide, at the top where the shirt half ended two ribbons that made the belt of it flowed down to the base to create a faux open look with bows at the end of the dress. The ribbons downward were lined in lace around the faux opening of the skirt. In the back was a large blue bow that served what Jez thought to be the cherry topping of the dress.
On the verge of actually being drunk, Jez finally came out of the TARDIS only to be greeted by the Doctor.
“Doctor!” Jez smiled, “You have quite a closet. I hope you like the dress I picked out. It practically jumped out at me.” She twirled around so the Doctor could see.
The Doctor nodded, “Yes, yes, looks good. I came by to make sure you got along all right. Have you been drinking?”
Jez quickly began to walk off, “No, no I haven’t. So, where is the mayor’s estate?”
“You have haven’t you? Jez, those aren’t our wines. They belong to someone else. You’ll have to repay them you know.”
“I will I will.” Jez huffed, “All and all though, where’s the estate?”
The Doctor shook his head and chuckled, “This is the estate. Seems I landed the TARDIS in the mayor’s wine keep. And you went and drank some.”
Jez blushed in embarrassment. “Right…He’s not a cruel evil dictator sort of mayor is he? Like the ‘look-at-me-wrong-and-I’ll-kill-you’ type is he?”
“No, no not at all. He’s more of the, ‘let’s-party-till-I-can-get-you-alone’ type. Come on, I have an invitation with ‘plus one’ on it, and you’re my plus one.” The Doctor offered his arm to Jez.
Jez smiled, the quick fright of having to pay a mayor back for wine stealing had been cast away when the Doctor offered her his arm. “Well, if anything, you’re my arm candy.” She joked. The two laughed at that and headed to the actual residence of the mayor.
A wigged servant met the two at the door and glanced at them skeptically, “Name please?” he asked in a pompous voice.
“The Doctor plus one.” The Doctor smiled and held up a piece of paper for the servant to scrutinize.
“Yes, right this way sir.” The servant said in a bored tone as he opened the door and motioned with his right arm.
The Doctor led Jez inside with him; Jez looked back at the servant who gave her a cold glare before turning back to the front. “Jerk.” Jez muttered. “Why did he let us in?”
The Doctor looked back at Jez, “Why not? I showed him valid papers.”
“That paper was blank.”
The Doctor looked at Jez, shocked at what she said, “What do you mean?” he pulled out the paper, “You don’t see any writing on it?”
Jez squinted, “No, it’s really blank.” She smiled nervously. Did she say or do something wrong? That shocked look from the Doctor wasn’t exactly a good shock look; at least, not that Jez could tell.
“Well Miss Nightmare! You’re either a genius, very observant, or you have psychic powers beyond that of a normal human. You’re truly a surprising girl.” The Doctor smiled, “Are you sure you’re human?”
“I’m beginning to question that…” Jez still had her confused nervous smile.
“Names please.” Another manservant, almost identical to the one at the door, stood at the top of the stairs taking the names of everyone so they could be publicly introduced to the other party members.
“The Doctor and this is Lady Nightmare.” The Doctor replied.
In the same toned voice as the other servant he announced the names of the new arrivals, “Sir Doctor and Lady Nightmare.” He then used the same hand motion as the first servant to encourage the two to go down the stairs.
“This is a huge house!” Jez whispered to the Doctor as they headed down the steps, “I mean, I didn’t see this place being two stories. And can’t the mayor afford a happier crew?”
The Doctor chuckled, “Jez, this is an experience none of your friends will ever have, and you’re complaining about the staff? You’re starting to sound like a real time traveler.”
“Am I not? I mean, I’m in time, traveling with you.” Jez smiled as she looked into the Doctor’s blue eyes.
The Doctor smiled back at her, “Get us a table will you? I’ll get a drink for us.” He was quickly off and making his way through the crowed.
Jez stood their, alone. “Of course, I get one glimpse of those pretty blues and he rushes off.” She muttered and made her way through the crowds, opposite the way the Doctor went.
She searched for a table that didn’t have anyone at it, she was hoping for a moment alone with the Doctor, without falling asleep in a Caribbean hotel like earlier, or getting drunk in the TARDIS. She finally found the perfect table, four seats, none of them occupied. She sat there at the table, waiting for the Doctor.
The Doctor finally showed up with a blonde on his arm. “Jez!” he smiled, “Look who I found, our hosts daughter, lady Jane. She’s really quite nice.” He said. The Doctor pulled open a seat for the girl and sat between Jez and Jane.
Jez looked at the girl, and smiled, she then looked back to the Doctor, “Jane?”
The girl smiled, “Yes, that’s my name, it’s a pleasure to meet you miss?” she asked.
“Jez, Nightmare, call me Nightmare.” She said a touch of venom in her voice.
“You two get to know each other, I’ll be right back.” The Doctor left quickly.
The two girls sat there in silence for a while. Finally Jez broke the uncomfortable silence, “So, Jane, that’s a very lovely name. I was told that my real mother had that name.”
“Real mother? Is not the mother you have your real mother?” Jane asked, she happy that Jez broke the silence; she herself was a very shy girl.
“Well, I was adopted, and then things went bad. My adopted mom killed herself, and then my dad went nuts. So I live with my best friend, practically my sister, Delilah.” Jez then thought backwards about what she had just said. “You know, I’m really bad at starting conversations, I’m so sorry. I hope you don’t think…ill of me.” She thought of the right thing to say, it was a different time and all.
Jane nodded, “its fine, and I’m not the best conversationalist either. I tend to stumble on my words and speak random things. Most unbecoming for a lady of my status. Father thinks I should have stayed in London. You say you where adopted? I was too. I don’t know who my real parents where. At least you know the name of your real mother.” Jane smiled. Sorrow painted her face briefly, and then the music picked up. The two girls talked about various things…clothes, men, music.
While the Ladies chatted away, the Doctor found himself investigating the many rooms of the Mayor’s mansion. He was looking for something, some one in particular, and the host of the evening, who left the party management to his new wife. “Hello? And what are you doing here?” The Doctor picked up a piece of paper he found on the floor of the office, it was a picture. What was really disturbing was that the picture was from a modern digital camera, and it was a picture of Jez sitting by a fountain. The door to the office shut with a slam. The Doctor turned quickly and rushed over to the door, locked. He pulled out his sonic screwdriver and pointed it to the door, there was a click and he tried to open the door again. Who ever shut the door also put an armoire in front of it.
As the Doctor tried to get out of the room, Jez and Jane went outside to escape the over crowding of the party. “So, there I was, standing in his door way wearing my pajamas and my favorite scarf. He looked at me, shocked and all then his girlfriend walks out of the back room wearing his robe.” Jez continued with a story she began earlier.
Jane listened intently, she giggled at the story now and then wondering where this girl lived that the people where so, un ashamed of their attire. Jez didn’t get to finish her story; a dark man appeared in front of them. He was cloaked and held a whip. The whip snapped, the girls ran away. Jez got hit with the whip first. It was meant to catch her arm, but instead sliced the skin on her back. Then the man cast the whip again, catching Jane. The girl screamed as loudly as possible. Right by the window of the office. Jez ran back to help her, but the man beat her, and hit them both over the head. The Doctor threw a chair out the window, and other party guests rushed out. The Doctor looked around, he found Jez’s scarf on the ground, she had it under her dress apparently. “No.” he whispered.
“What happened?” A man asked.
The Doctor turned to the crowed, “Some one has kidnapped the Mayors daughter, and Miss Nightmare.” He said solemnly.
