But really what young girl stays away from the one she is interested in?? So of course that did not stop me. SO one day as everyone was dancing by the fire I asked Karo to dance with me. I was about 17 at this time. Everyone around me was getting married, but my parents did not seem in a hurry for me to get married. Karo danced with me a he moved with such fluid grace. I had already been swept off my feet but now I believe he had done so literally. When the young ones started going to bed we went for a walk by the river. The night was breezy and wisps of my hair kept whipping me in my face. WE found a tall tree to sit under. While staring at the stars we talked about life. Of course we talked about Uncle since it is how we met. Karo said Uncle was like a father ro him. That he owed him much for all he had done. Uncle had helped him when everyone said Karo would die. The fever had plagued his family and very few men had survived it. IN the end four men were left to the family. Two were crippled from the illness. Now that the younger boys were of age he could repay Uncle by helping his family too.
I awoke to loud shouts that sounded like my father. I don't know when I fell asleep, but I was still lying on Karo's lap as my father yelled. He yelled that I was a disgrace for so freely giving myself away and I swore that is not what happened. Karo tried telling my father it was innocent, but he would not believe. Father started saying Karo must marry me since no one else would once word got out...If I had thought about it I would have known this is whatever one would think. Girls do not go walking with men unless they are thier Husband. It is not permitted and no matter what happens everyone believes the worst. I was guilty of this myself. I cannot say I was upset by the idea of marryng Karo. I thought it was a great idea, but Karo yelled to father that he knew his position and could not marry me. Father was shocked but quickly nodded his head agreeing saying he had not thought. I do not know what they where talking about but I was heart broken.
