Finding beautiful music is difficult, especially when one of the greatest genres (power metal) is so closely connected to one of the worst genres ever (metal).
I can look at the lyrics of most power metal songs, randomly sing them, and it will end up just as good or better than the actual melody.
It's like they don't actually craft melodious tunes through hours (or even minutes) of meticulous work, but instead; they just spout off whatever they can off of the top of their heads while making sure that there is a guy present who can transcribe every note as it is improvised.
I honestly cannot see how people could compare bands like Dragonforce or Freedom Call to almost ANY other power metal band out there.
It takes skill, time, and care to create such melodies, and stuff from bands like Manowar are just pitiful in comparison.
The basic problems of most power metal can be listed, and I will:
1. As stated before, melodies that sound ad-libbed right there on the spot. For a person like me who really appreciates melodious music, it is unacceptable and gets boring REALLY fast. Like-- right when it starts playing.
2. Songs that have a decent melody, but the music is weak and doesn't do anything to make it energetic or intriguing.
3. The opposite of number two, in which the melody sucks, but the music is just incredible. This creates a song which is, ultimately, worthless. If bands can't think of melodies, then they can hire me. I can think of one that isn't too complex within an hour, and if you give me a day, I'll think of something bloody awesome.
It's not THAT hard.
In rock music, I usually don't like more than one or two songs from ANY band.
In power metal, I generally don't like ANY songs by most bands, and no more than one or possibly two from others.
I would ask some people to give me some bands that sing melodious songs, but I would probably only succeed in being lambasted.
What ever.
