M.O.E. "Before the Misery"

S&Y

The radiant sun began to sink slowly beyond the tall pine trees of the forest as dusk drew near. The sky was filled with hues of vibrant pinks, violets, and blues as the clouds swirled overhead. Even the small fishing lake was shimmering with color from the fading sun. Wind swept softly over the long grass and tree leaves, harmonizing with the small ripples in the water, to make what seemed like a melody of serenity. The cawing of small birds echoed and rang against the trunks and branches of the forest’s trees. Two Elfish children, a Light and a Dark, sat side by side and dabbled their feet in the glowing lake as they laughed and stared at the sky.

“Look at that one Soya,” the Dark elf said as he nudged the Light elf with his elbow and pointed to the sky, “that one looks kind of like a dragon doesn’t it?” The Dark elf spoke in the language of Humans: a rarity among the Dark elfish race. Turning his head towards the sky, the Light elf stared at the cloud the other was pointing at. It was indeed a beautiful cloud. The Light elf, Soya, shifted his gaze from the cloud to the water as he placed a finger on his chin in thought. “What is…Dragon again?” he asked as he turned his head to the Dark elf. His ability to speak in Human tongue was limited, yet he tried his hardest to speak correctly. “Oh, well a Dragon is like a big lizard…you know? It has horns and wings and whiskers…” the Dark elf explained as he placed his hands in different positions to represent the different parts that made up a Dragon. Soya looked back up at the cloud for a reference. His eyes light up as he began to comprehend what a Dragon was. “Oh! I know Dragon. Yes, it does look like one,” he said happily as he watched the Dark elf continue to make funny faces. They both laughed as they continued to look up at the skies.
The sun was fading further and the stars began to glow faintly as the luminous moon began to appear. The two elves stretched their arms and laid their backs against the cool grass, still facing the clouds in the heavens. Soya sighed in relaxation. “Yumikaido?” he asked turning to the Dark elf, “do you think…I…see you tomorrow too?” His crystal blue eyes focused upon Yumikaido’s face with concern and anxiousness.

Yumikaido turned himself on his side and held his head up with his hand and elbow. “Of course you can, I’m not doing anything tomorrow. I’d love to see you again.” The blue vertical markings along the right side of his face began to loose their glow as the sun disappeared. Instead, the red horizontal marking on the left side began to shine brighter and brighter. His cheek wasn’t the only thing that began to glow, but his radiant red eyes did as well. It was a natural trait for a Dark elf to have glowing marks and eyes. Most people would find it frightening, yet Yumikaido’s eyes didn’t seem to have any menacing trait to them at all. “If you’re allowed to that is,” Yumikaido added as he flipped himself onto his back and rested his hands under his head. Soya looked to the side in dismay. He knew he wouldn’t be given a chance to wander around by himself for a very long time. The tips of his long ears sank a little, along with his heart. A gentle breeze streamed through the ends of his soft hair as he stared at the night sky. Such a beautiful night it was. He only wished that he could stay longer…no…for an eternity at the lake with his only friend.
“I don’t think…I come tomorrow…parents won’t like it if come,” Soya responded as he kept his gaze pointed toward the stars. Yumikaido nodded, aware that it was hard for Soya to even leave his house. “I understand,” he said while he turned himself on his side to face Soya, “when do you think I can see you again?” Soya replied with a shrug as he slowly sat himself up. Yumikaido did the same as he kept his steady gaze on Soya’s dismal face. It always made him feel a little despondent to see Soya so upset. A silence hung heavily in the cool air.
“I’ll see you again sometime…we can meet at the willow tree again,” Yumikaido said in a soft voice, breaking the silence. He pointed in the direction of the forest’s edge as he stood up. After helping Soya up as well, they both began walking. They stopped in front of the willow tree Yumikaido spoke of. Soya looked at the giant tree and then turned to Yumikaido with a puzzled look. “How will I find same tree again?” he asked as he tilted his head in question. Yumikaido hadn’t thought about that. There were so many willow trees around the forest’s lakes and rivers; how could they both remember which tree it was. He scratched his head and looked on the ground as he pondered.

“Oh, I know! Like this,” he said after quite some time. With his little fingers, he lifted a small pointed stone and began to carve into the side of the tree. “There,” he whispered with a smile, “See that? I made a ‘Y’ in the tree. It’s the first letter in my name. You should put your first letter on the tree too.” He handed the sharp rock to Soya hoping that Soya had understood what he just said. Although Soya didn’t understand all of what was said, he still understood the main message. Next to Yumikaido’s scratchy ‘Y’, Soya carved a pointy ‘S’.

“There, now we know which tree it is!” Yumikaido smiled. Soya smiled as well, although it didn’t quite look like one. Soya seldom smiled and had almost forgotten how. Being with Yumikaido had given Soya a chance to smile more frequently. “It got dark fast huh?” Yumikaido added as his red eyes glanced at the night sky, “it might be hard for you to see. I’ll walk you home if you want.”
“Thank you,” Soya replied, “But I…go home by self. I get in trouble if parent see.” Yumikaido nodded, “Alright. Be careful okay?”

Soya nodded in return, “I practice Human talk…so can talk to Yumikaido more.” Yumikaido smiled warmly and gave Soya a friendly embrace. A warm and relaxing breeze blew through their hair as it rustled the long willow branches that draped over them like a curtain. “Until next time,” he said as he loosened his grip and let Soya slowly walk away. Soya turned his head and waved Yumikaido ‘goodbye’ as he began to trot homeward.

The leaves from other nearby trees swirled in the wind and calmly fluttered to the ground near Yumikaido’s feet. He sighed as he watched Soya leave and turned the opposite direction. It was about time for him to return home as well. “Such a sweet child…It’s too bad he couldn’t stay with you longer” a hoarse voice whispered in his head. “Yeah…he’s really a nice kid,” Yumikaido answered back. It wasn’t the first time this voice had spoken to him…it had been there ever since he could remember. In fact, the voice was his only other friend. “I would do anything to keep him here...his parents don’t even like him that much from the sound of it,” Yumikaido continued as he kicked a small stone along the dirt. “They sound like horrible creatures to me…” the hoarse whisper replied, “He deserves to be with you instead.” Yumikaido shrugged, “I wish Misha could adopt him too…then he could be my little brother. I’ve always wanted one…Soya would be the best little brother. I could teach him how to read in Human and we could play games whenever we want.”

“You could have all the fun in the world with that elf couldn’t you…?” the voice asked slyly. Yumikaido responded with a nod of his head and an innocent smile. The voice gave a small chuckle, “I thought so…come now, let’s go back home…Misha is probably getting worried.”

The moon shone on brightly through the night sky as Yumikaido and his invisible companion trudged slowly home. The lamp posts on the cobblestone street flickered with a dim fire, reflecting off the glass windows of nearby wooden homes. “Do you think...Soya will be my friend forever?” Yumikaido asked the voice quietly.
“Oh…without question…” it replied reassuringly.

Yumikaido’s red eyes glowed softly, their red tint fading into the night as Yumikaido smiled and headed home.
