My First Christmas
By R.J. Shewmake for N.E. Ikeda

____My day started off just like any other. I had been sleeping during the night, waiting to be woken up gently by loving mother or father. And as I dream, I wonder curiously. Which of my parents will I be opening my sights to this lovely morning? Would it be my gentle mother, or perhaps my bold father? I would never know, and to each time, it’s a surprise to see their faces as the first sight each and every morning. But as I slept that night, I had a magical dream. I had dreamt of myself, sitting in my parents’ front yard. It looked just the same as it always had, but only this time, it felt cold. Not in a bad way, but just cold sensation was thrilling down my spine and through my body. This sensation made me feel a lot happier, and made me want to smile. In addition to this cold, yet happy feeling; there was brightness all around. I truly wish I knew what this dream was telling me. But before I could solve the mystery of these chills in my dream, I was awoken.

____And now I’m thinking back. Back to the curious thoughts I was wondering about. Who would it have been for me to open my eyes to on this brand new day? Was it my mother? Or was it my father? Surprisingly, it was both! My two parents, to whom I’m grateful to, for ever bringing my life to their world. But something was different about today, but I couldn’t place my finger on it. Mother had picked me up by my small and petite waist, while father only smiled and watched.

____“Why are you so happy, mother and father? What was it that put these cheerful smiles on your faces?” was all I could think, wishing I could have asked them.

____As they brought me down stairs from my very own bedroom, my eyes widened. This wasn’t my home. At least, not the home I fell asleep in last night. Everything had changed. Everything was much more colorful, and brighter, and just magnificent! There were brightly shining lights, decorating the walls and windows. And a tall mighty tree that looked as if it had grown through the carpeting over the night! It too, was also decorated in lights, and glitter-like ropes. With a golden star that glowed at the very top, as if it were a man on the top of a tall mountain and watching everyone from above.

____It was all so beautiful, and so very new to my own two eyes. Was there something special about today? Are my parents celebrating something? I didn’t know what else to expect, until my mother brought me closer to the window.

____“What is this? Is it rain? No. It’s much too soft and light. Are they bits and pieces of clouds falling from the sky?” was all I could ponder.

____And again, before I could study yet another phenomenon, I was interrupted by my mother, who dressed me in warm clothes. But I do not regret it. I have many years of my life ahead of me to study what I’ve yet to know about.

____Father had then stolen me from my mother’s grasp, as she let go of me willingly. I didn’t know where he was going to take me. But it was as if he was going to bring me outside. Oh, and he did. And I’m very glad that he did. It was then that I had over-heard my mother and Father talking, and that they call this strange material that falls gracefully from the sky “Snow”. And oh how I loved the snow. With each bit that happened to touch the soft baby flesh of my face, a familiar chilling sensation would scurry through my body. And it felt really nice! It truly did!

____I wish it that the very moment wouldn’t end, but to my disappointment, it was about to. Because Mother and Father were taking me to the store with them. But for what, I wonder? We had more than enough things at home, from the last I recall. And I’m sure mother had already had the meals of the day planned.

____“What are you scheming, mother and father? What are you two up to?” Suspiciously, I thought. And again, I wish I could have asked. I just have so many questions!

____But I suppose I’ll find it soon enough, because we’re finally here! The one shopping mall that mother and father always purchase their needs from. And to my very surprise, it too was decorated brightly, with smiles on everyone’s faces! And who is this man, sitting in a great big chair at the very center of the mall’s attention? A great big man, dressed in red and white? And with a loud laugh that was as jolly as his round belly! Sure enough, someone this popular would be known to me, right? But I guess not.

____Mother and Father brought me closer to this strange man. And it would appear to me that they were literally giving me to him!

____“Is this why you’re happy, mother? Is this why you’re smiling, father? Please, don’t say it is so, that the two of my loving and caring parents would be happy to give me away to a stranger?” But before I could think any further, there was a blinding bright flash, and the big man gave me back to my parents.

____“Thank goodness that was over. I’m so glad that you aren’t giving me away.” And I really was glad, too. I’d hate to be separated from dear mom and dad.

____But now I must wonder what it was that caused that white flash in my eyes? And why did the big man in red give mother and father a piece of paper? Is there something written on its surface? Is it a picture? I had to know! But mother and father wouldn’t show me.

____We’re finally home; home sweet home. It’s hard to believe that the Sun had gone to bed already, and that the Moon decided to come out for yet another night. Mother, father; what is that paper, which the red man gave you? What is that paper that you’re placing in a wooden frame? I’d very much love to know!

____And to my surprised, they showed me! They finally showed me! And I was correct all along! It was a picture! It really was! And who would have guessed? It was a picture of me sitting on that man’s lap! And along the lower-right corner was a golden text saying “Baby’s First Christmas”. And seeing this photo made my heart warm. It really did. So warm, that I swore that I could feel it coming up my lungs, and through my throat. But it wasn’t the warmness that escaped through my lips, that evening. No, it was something even greater!

____“Santa!” was what it was. Real words! My very first word! And it made my parents smile. It made them cheerful, and laughed. And it had even put them on the phone lines, calling relatives and friends!

____This wonderful life that was given to me by my two loving parents had met a new day. A day everyone called “Christmas”. A day that made me so happy inside, that even my first word would slip passed my lips! And that was my Christmas Gift from my parents. And that was my Christmas Gift to my Parents, from me.

This Christmas story was written for Nicole, and was inspired by a poem that I had written during last year's Christmas Season.
The storyline in both of the poem and short story are the same. The only real difference is the fact that one is a poem, and one is a story. Aside a few smaller difference. such as the father not being mentioned at all, in the poem. and in the short story, I gave the baby more thought and opinion.

My First Christmas
By R.J. shewmake

My day started off just like any other,
waking up one morning to see my mother.
She looked so happy, and smiled all around.
Wait, what is this? A lot of lights was to be found.
Yellow, green, red, and blue,
What's going on, mother? What is it you're up to?
She picked me up, and held me high.
It was through the window I saw, white powder from the sky.
What is that? I thought, wanting to see and feel.
Mother took me outside; Oh my gosh, is this real?
The white felt so nice, so breezy and cool.
Regardless what I wore, regardless of my wool.
I'm still wondering, what is going on?
A tree in every home, and guess what was upon?
Lots and lots of lights, shining through the night.
I could see them all, they were all so bright.
Everyone was happy, not only dear mother.
Trading gifts, presents, and treats to eachother.
It was all so exciting, the wonderful feeling.
But wait mother, why are we leaving?
She put me in her car, drove me off to the mall.
I didn't know why, but there's something different in the hall.
A large crowd of people, gathering around a stand.
Standing at the center, dressed in red was a man.
I was scared, yet somewhat calm.
I can trust him, because I trust my mom.
She put me on his lap, people watched and stared.
I didn't know what to do, so all I did was glare.
It was then there was a flash, a bright spark of light.
"Yay, it's done!" My mother shouted with delight.
She grabbed a piece of paper, and took me home.
Inside we went, my safe sheltered dome.
Mother showed off the paper, happily yet furiously.
What is it? What is it? I wondered so curiously.
She put it in a frame, and hung it over the wall,
I wish I could see, I wish I were tall.
But what is it now? She's lifting me to her height?
Oh yay! Oh yay! I can reach, it's in my sight!
I was excited even more, higher than Abyss.
It was a picture of me! "Baby's first christmas."
