Exerpt
Hours after the execution, Serenity was still sitting in the square staring blankly at the execution stand where her sister had been put to death for being no more than a child. All emotion was drained out of her, she was just...numb. Somewhere behind her, a fight was breaking out between a dog and a cat.
"Are you just going to sit there and mope all day?" someone asked behind and to the left of her.
Saying nothing, Serenity continued to stare at the execution stand blankly. Only when knuckles rapped on her head did Serenity stand and glare at the person who hit her head. "What?!"
The person who had knocked on her head, which Serenity would later learn was named Artemis, flicked one of her fox ears and twitched her fox tail. Glaring at Serenity, she said, "I asked if you're going to sit there and mope all day?"
"My sister was killed here!" Serenity said, pointing at the execution stand. "And all she did was accidentally trip him like any other toddler her age! SHE KNEW NO BETTER!"
"We all have someone who died up there," the woman replied. "My brother looked at the King wrong and was beheaded for it."
"His cruelty cannot be allowed!" Serenity said, glancing towards the sound of the dog and cat fighting. "He...he needs to be..."
"Where are you going?" the woman asked as Serenity walked in the direction of the sound of the fighting animals.
Three mastiffs had a small black kitten cornered and were trying to eat her. However, the kitten would lash out with her claws every time one of the dogs shoved their nose towards her. When the kitten noticed Serenity was watching, it appeared to grin
. Picking up a stout stick, the kitten spun it over her head and tucked it under her left foreleg and took up a fighting stance.
"A kung-foo kitty," the woman said, standing next to Serenity. "Cute." Want more? Clickie
