Have you ever played Final fantasy seven? I worshipped it. that game was amazing, how it pertains to life so well, with such powerful metaphors.
THe city I live in is Midgar to me. they call it Fort McMurray. It's located at the a*****e of the Earth, you know, in northern alberta, where it is cold for 10 of 12 months and surprises you with snow in may. The cold isnt what bugs me though. it's the oil plants. Suncor, Syncrude, and a few other smaller corporations created this city for the sole purpose of raping the planet.
People come from far and wide to make money here. they have for generations. a few of us, though... were actually born here. Born into a world where people will do anything for money, where greed rules over all. What do parents think!? "I'll bring up my children here, in this place, and they'll turn out to be money-grubbing bastards too."
Drug central. Highest suicide rate in the province. Criminals everywhere you look. Everyone is a criminal here. Some of the most honest people I know are criminals. I trust them with my life. Better a criminal than a 'hard working citizen' here. This place is filth. We have the worst sort of drugs, on our streets, in our backyards, huge drug parties all over, huge drug growing ops, and what are the popo's doing? THEY'RE BUSTING PEOPLE FOR NOT WEARING SEATBELTS. that's right. Our city has the highest crime rate, and they're making the least guilty people pay. There is no sense of justice, only a quota to be filled.
Everybody hates this city. My friend Boots tried to bike away, numerous times, he didn't even have a home, they always caught him and brought him back. Why? he broke a few laws. He smoked pot to ease the pain of living in the bush at -40 degrees celsius. You never see the homeless here. they are forced to hide with every ounce of wit they have, because and meager shelter they create is burnt down by the city. People are found frozen to death in the dumpsters.
This place is Midgar to me. the sad part is, it's also the place I've always called home. I was born in this city. no matter where I go, it always calls me back. Even hell can be a home sweet home. I blame the parents. How could they do this? Bring life into a place like this, where they know that then their children will grow to love the city, and then be trapped in it as well? Even the activists, the eco warriors, the young and spirited, end up slaved to the local corporation. Wal mart, mcDicks, staples. once those oil fields dry up, nobody will live here anymore.
This boomtown will be a ghost town. The land will be poisoned with pollution and hatred. I will not die happy while this city remains as it is. I want to see those plants bombed. I'm sure Bush will take care of that, though... oops, I mean, 'terrorists from a foreign country' that curiously enough, the us has had quarrels with before... But that's another rant, for another time.
