Scrubbing the floors was not my idea of fun. My Idea of fun included playing with the other kids in the orphanage. Of course... Thats never "fun" enough for a "Big girl" like me.
I'm only 9 years old, chores must have been added to my list of "Fun" items without me knowing. I was on my knees, scrubbing the whole kitchen floor with my toothbrush that I used every night.
The worst part of the "chores" was the time limits. If you didn't have chores done you couldn't get the "reward". If you didn't get the "Reward" you were in the "Torture chamber" as we called it.
In the "Torture Chamber"You were tied down and whipped. We learned that the more you screamed and cried for mercy, the faster You could get out. When you got out you were sent to bed without dinner.
The "Reward" for the kids ages 1-9 got candy. The "reward" for the children that were older was a mystery for me. Those children got a meal and were sent to bed. Some of the older girls got the reward for months straight. We didn't see them for almost a year because of the reward.
Every child's birthday the child would get a reward that was the reward for their age. My birthday is tomorrow, so I get to find out what the "reward" is.
"Get out of your dreamland and get busy!"
"Yes ma'am."
I looked at the clock. 7:30pm. A few more hours untill my reward.
...
When I was 100% sure the floor was shiney I walked into the headmaster's room.
"Yes?"
"I finished my room." i whispered
She stood up and walked in to inspect it. When she came back she smiled. "How would you like an early birthday present?"
My face brightened as I looked at the clock. It was 2 hours before 12a.m.
"Yes ma'am"
