I just finished Neon Genesis Evangelion (but I haven't seen the movie). Wow. It was WEIRD. One word: BUDGET. I mean, they had no money. They switched to storyboards for crying out loud.
The saddest thing was when Kaoru died. He was definitely the coolest character on that show, and I don't like yaoi or anything, I just mean he was cool and NICE. Something almost no one else on that show was. They all seemed to have issues with just being happy.
